You have to be really careful about scented candles

Well, it kind of makes you wonder, 'What do I know? What wisdom do I have?' So I started keeping a list of my wisdom. Part of it is, you have to be really careful about scented candles. There's really only two kinds worth having... Diptyque or Trudon.

Holiday fragrance gifts 2017, part 3

Posted by Robin on 6 December 2017 4 Comments

The third entry in our annual series on fragrance related holiday gifts is all about home fragrance. As always, please add any of your own picks in the comments!

From Poglia, the Affumicata candle: “We collaborated with Joya Studios to create a signature candle and scent, Affumicata (“smokey” in Italian), a comforting smell with notes of sandalwood, saddle leather and pepper. The base of each piece is a porcelain vessel with a 22k gold rim, and the imprint of Poglia’s horse-shoe ring on the back. The lids are also made of porcelain and adorned with a solid brass piece. Each candle was hand-poured in Brooklyn, NY.” With notes of Brazilian pepper, saddle leather, brushed suede, hay, charred oak and sandalwood, 260g, $135…

The Étoile candle, from Cire Trudon's 2017 holiday collection: "Like a wooden breeze, Étoile re-enacts the scent of traditional Japanese incense. Commonly used in Japanese interiors, the voluptuousness of cedar wood Hinoki settles in; it is softened by a hint of balm that calls for the festive season. The open-knot (Hana-Musubi) expresses the wish that good news come repeatedly. It can easily be tied and untied." Additional notes include rose, aldehyde, patchouli, tonka bean and sandalwood. $105.

St. Louis by the workshop of El Greco

I’m a Francophile when it comes to candles. Cire Trudon is part of my Candle Triumvirate; Astier de Villatte and Diptyque make up the others. (I’ve always been afraid to try Frédéric Malle candles…I have a feeling they’d expand my candle obsession and budget to an even crazier level.)

I was interested (that’s about the best I can muster these days in Perfumeland, no longer am I “thrilled” or “excited” about new launches) when I heard Cire Trudon had developed a personal fragrance line called Trudon (how many times did I wish one of Cire Trudon’s wonderfully scented room sprays or candles was a perfume?) I’m happy to report three of the first five perfumes pleased me, and today I’m reviewing two: Olim1 and Mortel2. Robin Here at NST beat me to my other favorite: Deux (II)…
