Aftelier Organic Ylang Face Elixir ~ scented body product review

Posted by Jessica on 8 November 2013 15 Comments

Aftelier Organic Ylang Face Elixir

The weather has suddenly turned cool and windy here in the northeast, so it’s the perfect time for me to upgrade my skincare for extra moisture and protection — and if I can work a good-smelling product or two into my regimen, then all the better! Natural perfumer Mandy Aftel of Aftelier has just released a new Organic Ylang Face Elixir, which I’ve been sampling this week. It contains organic ylang ylang, a creamy floral blended with bright pink grapefruit and blood orange, both known for their toning and softening properties, in a base of seven organic oils (rice bran, sweet almond, apricot kernel, camellia, grapeseed, squalene and rose hip seed).

When I first became seriously interested in fragrance, and I was smelling as many perfumes as I could in order to define what I liked, I realized that ylang ylang was (and is) one of my favorite floral notes…

Scented Lip Balms: A Round-Up for Winter 2013

We often discuss “niche perfumery,” but what about niche toiletries? Lip balm, for example. Who doesn’t own a lip balm of some kind? It might just be a basic ChapStick or Blistex picked up at the drugstore. On the other hand, it might be a lip-care item with a carefully honed image (and a matching scent), designed to appeal to a very specific user group. Here’s a selection of quirky lip balms that have caught my attention over the past few months.

For the traditionalist-with-a-twist: Burt’s Bees Revitalizing Lip Balm with Blueberry and Dark Chocolate. This new iteration has the same ideal consistency as the original Beeswax formula, with natural flavoring from extracts of antioxidant-rich (and tasty) blueberries and dark powdered cocoa…

Lush Rose Jam Shower Gel ~ scented body product review

Posted by Jessica on 18 October 2013 30 Comments

rose petals with dew

It’s no secret that I’m a rose-lover, as well as a longtime Lush shopper, so there was little chance that I’d be able to ignore Lush’s limited edition Rose Jam Shower Gel. Rose Jam’s fragrance is an “indulgent blend of rose, vanilla and lemon leaves,” the same blend that shows up in Lush’s Ro’s Argan Body Conditioner (cleverly named for Rowena, one of Lush’s product inventors) and Rose Jam Bubbleroon (a solid, dissolvable bubble-bath treat). The ingredients for Rose Jam in its shower gel format include real rose absolute, Egyptian geranium oil, Sicilian lemon oil and vanilla pod infusion.

I’ve sampled Ro’s Argan Body Conditioner, but somehow never got around to purchasing a full tub — the “body conditioner” idea just doesn’t work for me, somehow. I’ve sniffed the Rose Jam Bubbleroon in stores, but never brought one home, because I don’t take baths all that often and anyway, the per-bath cost of Lush’s bubble bars is a bit prohibitive. On the other hand, I scooped up a medium-size bottle of Rose Jam Shower Gel and I’m trying to restrain myself from a return visit to Lush to grab more, more more…

Aroma M Beauty Camellia Body/Bath Oil ~ scented body product review

Posted by Jessica on 30 August 2013 13 Comments

Italian jasmine

Last autumn I wrote a review of two new beauty products from Aroma M, Camellia Hair Oil and Camellia Face Oil, which smelled as beautiful as they felt. Aroma M has just added another item to its beauty line, a Camellia Body/Bath Oil; now, in an ideal world, you could anoint and scent yourself from head to toe with these elixirs.

The Camellia Body/Bath Oil, like its two sister products, is crafted from thoughtfully selected, all-natural ingredients. Its base is a blend of camellia seed oil, grape seed oil, jojoba oil, and vitamin E; its scent is a bouquet of essential oils of jasmine, neroli, geranium, Moroccan rose and frankincense. The scent of these combined oils (which are all beneficial to the skin) is similar to that of the Camellia Face Oil, with the addition of a bewitching rose note…

Vitabath Moisturizing Body Wash and Hydrating Lotion ~ scented body product reviews

Vitabath Moisturizing Body Wash and Hydrating Lotion

The original Vitabath Bath & Shower Geleé is such a familiar item, standing there in its clover-green label on the drugstore shelf, that we might not even really see it anymore. It’s a classic that’s worth keeping in mind, however, and now Vitabath offers a new range of fragranced bath and body products in four scent families: Fruit Fanatic, Spa Day, In Bloom and Cupcake Couture. I’ll probably pass on that last one, just because I’m not really a fan of dessert-y body products, but some of the fruit scents sound fun (especially Wild Red Cherry and Pomegranate & Blood Orange), and I’ve enjoyed sampling a few items from the In Bloom and Spa Day lines.

Since this has been a sticky, hot month or so, I’ve been reaching for cool, greenish scents, and Vitabath’s Spa Day collection offers several. I like Citron Leaves, a bright-and-light blend of verbena and lemongrass that gives an instant sense of refreshment. Green Tea & Sage is clean and herbal, with just a faint hint of something musky-woodsy beneath its smooth tea notes…
