Zu-koh: incense powders for the body

Posted by Kevin on 25 October 2016 13 Comments

Along with glorious statues, ritual objects and religious texts and scholarship, incense arrived in Japan with Buddhism in the sixth century. Incense experienced in temples during Buddhist ceremonies must have inspired Japanese (who could afford it) to burn incense in their homes, not only to commemorate ancestors, deities and important life (and death) events, but to show they were sophisticated. Houses were scented, clothes were hung in ways and places to absorb incense aromas, hair was perfumed. Over the centuries lighthearted ways to enjoy incense were developed: the incense ceremony (kodo) and incense games (one of the most famous, Genji-ko, was associated with the eleventh-century novel The Tale of Genji).

Japanese incense blends changed over time, from complex mixes of ingredients formed into a variety of shapes to “purer” enjoyment of prized, rare, exorbitantly priced wood chips. Bunch o’ limited edition collector bottles (& some other stuff) 2016, part 13

Posted by Robin on 23 September 2016 10 Comments

More limited edition collector fragrance bottles, with the usual disclaimers: in most of these cases, the juice is unchanged, just the bottle is “special” (or not, as the case may be), and some of these may not be available in the US. A graceful press of the bulb releases the airy, loose, iridescent gold powder, along with a rush of delightful scent. The powder is housed in a reinterpretation of the world-famous Shalimar fragrance bottle.” $98 at Nordstrom…

Quick reviews of three scented body products I’ve enjoyed using this summer, and do add your own recent favorites in the comments!

Tauer Perfumes Rose Delight Body Oil

Tauer Perfumes Rose Delight Body Oil

Tauer Perfumes introduced Rose Delight Body Oil early this summer, and I was sent a bottle for review. Normally when I am sent a full bottle of something, I try it, then give it away, but I’ve used so much of this particular bottle that at this point I might as well keep it, so I will.1 It’s essentially jojoba oil (90%) scented with rose. Tauer describes it as “rose petals on a gourmand base”, and it is lightly sweet…

A summer of violets

Posted by Jessica on 14 July 2016 30 Comments

Violet beauty products, 1

After writing last week’s review of Fabergé Straw Hat, I took a look around and realized that my violet obsession isn’t restricted to perfumes. I’m applying and ingesting and inhaling other violet-perfumed products on a regular basis, too. Here’s a quick round-up of some favorites.

Lush Daddy-O shampoo (top center image) is anything but a “shrinking violet” —its floral aroma is rich and vibrant, with added notes of ylang ylang and violet leaf to add complexity. The scent will linger in your hair all day…
