Burberry My Burberry Black ~ fragrance review

Posted by Jessica on 10 November 2016 19 Comments

Lily James for My Burberry Black

We’ve had the usual wave of “dark” and “noir” flankers this fall, and here’s another one: Burberry’s My Burberry Black, a flanker to My Burberry (2014). Like the original My Burberry, My Burberry Black was developed by perfumer Francis Kurkdjian. It’s described as “an intense and sensual reinterpretation…a London garden amidst a gathering storm; heavy rain contrasting with the warm and captivating flora,” and its notes include jasmine, candied rose, peach nectar, amber and patchouli.

I tried My Burberry when it was released and it didn’t make much of an impression on me. I just revisited it and it still seems to me like an inoffensive sweet pea perfume, easy to wear to work or brunch. My first impression of My Burberry Black, on the other hand, is that it’s best reserved for evening wear…

Etat Libre d’Orange Hermann ~ fragrance review

Etat Libre d’Orange Hermann à mes côtés me paraissait une ombre, brand image

To be precise, this Etat Libre d’Orange fragrance isn’t just called Hermann. It’s Hermann à mes côtés me paraissait une ombre, a line from a poem by Victor Hugo. Translated, that means “by my side, Hermann seemed to me like a shadow.” Here, we’ll stick simply to Hermann.1

“Perfume as shadow” is a beautiful way to describe the feel of a dark, cool, sheer fragrance. To me, Hermann fills the bill. It also leans masculine and is almost infuriatingly persistent…

Providence Perfume Co Love-In-A-Mist ~ fragrance review

Posted by Jessica on 3 November 2016 20 Comments

love-mist-s

The newest perfume from the independent natural line Providence Perfume Co is Love-In-A-Mist, a feminine floral fragrance named after a wildflower of the same name. Its composition includes notes of love-in-a-mist, mimosa, pink peppercorn, sandalwood and sweet clover.

The flower Love-In-A-Mist (Nigella damascena) is an annual plant with pale blue blossoms surrounded by delicate, ferny leaves. I’ve never seen it in “real life,” but it sounds like something that would have been mentioned in Elizabethan and Victorian verse, doesn’t it? And apparently it has inspired artists and artisans to create textiles and jewelry as well as some beautiful illustrations…

Kenzo World ~ perfume review & a quick Kenzo poll

Posted by Robin on 1 November 2016 60 Comments

Margaret Qualley for Kenzo World

Ok perfumistas, give us a vote on Kenzo as a perfume house. Are you a fan? Not a fan? Or, like me, do you have nostalgic warm fuzzies for the good old days of dependable if not earth-shattering fragrances like KenzoAir and Kenzo Amour (or even farther back: Jungle L’Elephant), but look with some dismay on what seems lately to be little more than an endless stream of Flower and L’Eau Par Kenzo flankers?

Wherever you fall on the spectrum, the new Kenzo World is not likely to radically shift your outlook…

How I Wear Perfume Now

Posted by Angela on 31 October 2016 94 Comments

Shalimar Extrait, cap

The week before last, I quit my office day job. I’m transitioning into a new life that’s part-time writer and part-time shop girl supplemented by whatever freelance assignments I can scare up. Even in this short time, my habits have changed: I’m going to bed later and getting up later; I’m outside more and feeling good moving my body instead of trapped catatonic in my office; I’m getting a lot more writing done. And, I’m wearing perfume differently.

First, I’m loving being able to wear whatever fragrance I want. I realized that I’ve been unconsciously limiting my perfume choices so I wouldn’t draw attention to myself. Now I’m like a starving kid with full access to the candy store, and I’m pulling out the big guns…
