Nina Ricci L’Air du Temps ~ fragrance review

Posted by Angela on 22 May 2017 33 Comments

Nina Ricci L'Air du Temps brand image

I’d call Nina Ricci L’Air du Temps “youthful,” except that I’m not sure anyone young today would wear it, except ironically. Yet, L’Air du Temps seems ill fit for a mature woman. I imagine it on a mid-century ingenue, say Natalie Wood. L’Air du Temps’s clean, full floral bouquet with a hint of clove is too innocent for most people today over the age of 16, yet, at the same time, too old fashioned to appeal to them.

Francis Fabron, author of Givenchy L’Interdit, also developed L’Air du Temps. The fragrance launched in 1948 — the height of Dior’s New Look…

Posted by Robin on 22 May 2017 42 Comments

post box

It’s only our second Monday Mail post for 2017, so again, I hope there are still some readers around who remember the drill! Grimar wants our help finding his perfect indie / niche summer fragrance (he recently bought Amouage Jubilation XXV, and that will cover his winter needs). He can pay up to $300 US. Here is what we know about Grimar:

Vanacci Lockstone ~ scented jewelry review

Posted by Jessica on 18 May 2017 25 Comments

Vanacci Lockstone bracelet

Finding a fragrance you truly love is a pleasurable challenge; making it last on your skin can be a more frustrating situation. A few years back, Angela wrote a post about ways to make fragrance last longer, and it’s still popular. More recently she reviewed a perfume “primer” named Canvas & Concrete, a spray-on base layer that helps the fragrance to “cling” and evolve more slowly. I tried Canvas & Concrete, but it gave me a rash, so I’ve been on the lookout for an alternative method to make my lighter fragrances stick around longer.

Vanacci, a British company that offers men’s wallets and watches, has launched a line of “fragrance-enhancing products” including pendants, cufflinks and bracelets. These accessories all incorporate “Lockstone,” a “microabsorbent” material that reportedly holds and gradually releases perfume so its scent lasts seven times longer than it would on your skin. I was curious enough to try a Lockstone item, especially since the products have a simple, minimalist look…

Etat Libre d’Orange You or Someone Like You ~ short review & a very long digression about fragrance notes

Etat Libre d'Orange You or Someone Like You logo

And the raw materials Caroline used are irrelevant. The scent is the scent. If you need to know what’s in it, “You” is probably not for you.1

That’s Chandler Burr, who is familiar to perfumistas as the author of Emperor of Scent and The Perfect Scent, as the New York Times’ perfume critic from 2006 through 2010, and as a “curator of olfactory art”. The “Caroline” is perfumer Caroline Sabas. The “You” is You or Someone Like You, Burr’s new fragrance under the auspices of French niche line Etat Libre d’Orange, and named for Burr’s first novel. Unbeknownst to Burr, Etat Libre d’Orange did post a few of the fragrance notes online (rose, mint, herbs), but they were removed shortly after, and I can vouch for the fact that they were not all that helpful…

Oriza L. Legrand Foin Fraichement Coupe ~ fragrance review

Posted by Kevin on 10 May 2017 13 Comments

Last week, loud thunderstorms rumbled through town for over twelve hours. For me, this was a treat; it’s rare to hear thunder or see lightning in Seattle. As my house rattled and the lights flickered on and off, as winds sent my rooster weather vane spinning, and heavy rains (and hail!) pounded the roof and bricks, I laid in bed with my cat Vanya Mandelstam and thought of the old days in Virginia when, as a little boy, I’d enjoy a good electric storm from the safety of a shed at my Aunt Lois’s house. Her home was next to fields and woods and in summer I had a good view as lightning flashed through hay or corn or pine trees. It was a sensational experience. As the storm strengthened, I would feel physically elated, jolted to life, as if I had just put a whole lemon in my mouth and bit down — my tongue would tingle, my throat would constrict; a flash of bitterness would travel through the roof of my mouth into my brain and I’d feel as if I had been scalped…the top of my head became numb.

When I described these feelings to a friend, she said: “Are you sure you weren’t struck by lightning?” I don’t think so, but the shed DID have a tin roof. ..
