Serge Lutens Dent de Lait ~ perfume review

Posted by Robin on 8 August 2017 62 Comments

Serge Lutens Dent de Lait

Changes are afoot at French niche house Serge Lutens, in case you didn’t get the memo. What was once the “export line”, that is, the scents you could buy in the rectangular 50 ml bottles, is soon to be “Collection Noire”, in 100 ml for €180.1 Some of the fragrances from the export line have been shuffled into what was once the “exclusive line”, that is, the bell jars. The Vapo series, in which “exclusive” fragrances were made widely available in 30 ml travel sizes, is possibly gone. Maybe some scents have been discontinued altogether, maybe they haven’t, I’ve heard both cases stated with authority.2 Reports of the brand’s fragrances being significantly reformulated have been around for years now, and that is true of so many brands that perhaps the time has come when you should never replace a bottle of anything without smelling a new tester first.

None of this really matters much to me. I haven’t adored a new Serge Lutens scent in years,3 and I have so much perfume that I’ll possibly never need to replace any of my old Lutens favorites…

Hilde Soliani Una Tira L’Altra & Conaffetto ~ fragrance reviews

Hilde Soliani Una Tira L'Altra & Conaffetto

You know the whole “scent-is-memory” thing? Sometimes I get a little tired of hearing about it, science notwithstanding. I don’t even know whether it affects me, when we’re talking strictly about perfume. A specific fragrance can remind me of people and prior scenarios involving that same fragrance, of course — Guerlain Shalimar will always remind me of a certain eccentric aunt, and patchouli oil of a dear college friend — but there’s no memory to account for my love of roses and violets or my distaste for pear or indolic jasmine notes, for example.

Food and scent and memory, on the other hand — there you’ve got me. I realized again how susceptible I am to the combination of smell, taste and storytelling when I recently sampled a few scents from niche perfumer Hilde Soliani…

DS & Durga Italian Citrus and Stora Skuggan Silphium ~ fragrance reviews

Posted by Kevin on 2 August 2017 25 Comments

The dog days of summer! Seattle should reach 100 degrees Fahrenheit tomorrow! I plan on wearing perfume as I work in the garden to keep things alive (my water bill$ make friends shriek and look at me in disbelief). During this week of scorching temperatures, I decided to wear two new “garden” fragrances, one based on citrus, the other on silphium (a mystery plant).

Let’s start with citrus, “Italian” citrus. DS & Durga Italian Citrus presents a citrus-lover’s dream list of notes…

Galanos by Parfums Galanos ~ fragrance review

Posted by Angela on 31 July 2017 15 Comments

Parfums Galanos

For me, vintage clothing falls into two categories. The first category includes dresses that make a statement because of their obviously unfashionable color, print, and/or cut.1 A Nixon-era shift in a daisy print might fit here, or a full-skirted 1950s day dress. The second category encompasses clothing that seems just a bit out of style from its color or hemline, but that’s easily absorbed into a modern wardrobe. Examples here would be a 1970s saddle leather handbag or a vintage cashmere twin set. The quality of the bag tells you it’s no modern-day mall purchase, and the offbeat robin’s-egg blue of the cashmere cardigan reads more as Doris Day than Taylor Swift, but is easily worn with whatever pair of pants you pull out of your closet.

Galanos from Parfums Galanos fits neatly into the second category…

The Monday Mail ~ help Chris find a new fragrance

Posted by Robin on 31 July 2017 62 Comments

post box

We have another Monday Mail request. Chris wants our help deciding on his first “serious” fragrance purchase — he’s willing to invest some money and time to find the right scent — and he’d like to explore more niche lines. He’s looking for a day-wear signature scent, something that makes him feel good. While it doesn’t necessarily have to be entirely office-safe, it should be something that isn’t offensive to others. Chris lives near a big city so has good access to stores, and he can spend up to $300. Here is what we know about Chris:

Chris is in his early 30s and lives in the US.

In his free time, he likes hiking, swimming, standup comedy, technology and golf.

His perfect fragrance would be uplifting, masculine, and would stand out to some degree. He’d also like something with decent longevity…
