Byredo Encens Chembur ~ fragrance review

Posted by Kevin on 6 September 2017 22 Comments

One of my favorite times of year to wear incense perfumes is during Indian Summer — when days are hot and nights are chilly. Light and soft incense perfumes fit perfectly with the scents of dry leaves and the lingering aromas of smoke from neighborhood fireplaces.

Many of my once-favorite incense perfumes no longer appeal; their artificial ingredients have become obnoxious to me, maybe due to reformulations or my nose getting accustomed (and sensitive) to Iso E Super, Cashmeran, Ambrox and the like. (And must vanilla be in everything?)

Though I appreciate many Byredo fragrances (I love Pulp), I missed Encens Chembur’s debut nine years ago…

2 for Tuesday ~ Nomenclature Shi_so & Cire Trudon Deux

Posted by Robin on 5 September 2017 16 Comments

Quick reviews of two niche variations on green: Nomenclature Shi_so and Cire Trudon Deux (II).

Nomenclature Shi_so

Nomenclature Shi_so

I am rather late with this one — Shi_so is exactly the sort of crisp and light fragrance that comes in handiest in high summer. Like the others in the Nomenclature line, it’s highlighting a synthetic aromachemical, in this case, glycolierral, which is meant to capture crushed ivy leaves…

Sylvaine Delacourte Florentina ~ fragrance review

Posted by Angela on 4 September 2017 14 Comments

Sylvaine Delacourte Florentina

When I chose Sylvaine Delacourte Florentina to review, I didn’t know Kevin had already served it papers in his review of the line’s Helicriss, where he called Florentina “the most insufferable of the bunch” of the house’s releases. I understand that. If you don’t like powder and musk, you might well loathe Florentina.

Me? I’m a fan. I love a silky soft, swan’s-down puff of a perfume, and Florentina is all about that. To me, its musk is more about texture and body than about cleaning products…

Olfactive Studio Close Up & Woody Mood ~ fragrance reviews

Posted by Jessica on 31 August 2017 5 Comments

I just spent a few enjoyable minutes doing some online window-shopping for sweaters and autumn accessories; it’s almost September, after all, and what better time to fantasize about a new pair of boots? This is the moment when I also start thinking about switching my summer perfumes (fruity roses, sheer beachy blends) for spicier, richer compositions. Fortunately, I have on hand small samples of two appropriate fragrances from French niche line Olfactive Studio: Close Up, launched in fall 2016, and the recently released Woody Mood.

Close Up was developed for Olfactive Studio by perfumer Annick Menardo and (as is customary for the brand) was inspired by a photograph: a very close view of an eyeball’s iris by Suren Malvelyan…

J.F. Schwarzlose Treffpunkt 8 Urh, Perris Monte Carlo Absolue d’Osmanthe & Le Galion Special for Gentlemen ~ fragrance reviews

Posted by Kevin on 30 August 2017 16 Comments

Horror of horrors…Labor Day is next Monday! Though some Northwesterners (not me! I’m still a Californian at heart) love the onset of dark, chilly days, stormy weather and rain, rain, rain, I’d prefer to be someplace sunny. I’m preparing for autumn in Perfumeland by clearing out many hundreds of perfume samples I’ve accumulated over the last six months (they will find good homes). I’m sad to report that out of those hundreds of samples, not many stood out; and I’ve already reviewed most of the ones I liked/loved. (Of course, my complaints of showers, clutter and fragrance disappointments are all ridiculous “problems,” but getting lost for an hour in perfume fantasy is a refuge, and I can make people laugh when I lament: “What will I review NEXT week?” Such a weighty question….)

BUT: in this last clean-up, I’ve discovered three perfumes worth sniffing…
