Fragrance Families Your Way

Posted by Angela on 25 September 2017 101 Comments

Iris fragrances at Fumerie

At Fumerie last week, I saw testers grouped by fragrance families: citrus, floral, woody — well, you get the idea. It inspired two thoughts. First, is there a way to organize fragrances that might speak more directly to what perfume shoppers really want? Next, do I have a personal fragrance classification system?

My guess is that most non-perfume-fiend fragrance shoppers would be happy in a store that classified fragrance fairly simply. Five categories come to mind. “Clean” is the first. I bet “clean” is the first descriptor lot of perfume shoppers utter…

Top 10 Fall Fragrances 2017

Posted by Erin on 22 September 2017 57 Comments

Where I live, it is the first day of autumn, and this year, September is the new August: after a wet and confusingly mild vacation season1, we look likely to celebrate a glorious Indian Summer. I have always loved the early fall, so I’m tempted, each time I select the autumnal Top 10 at Now Smell This, to stack it with all my favorite chypres, floral ambers and woody orientals. Jo Malone English Oak & Redcurrant and English Oak & Hazelnut ~ fragrance reviews

Posted by Jessica on 21 September 2017 25 Comments

English Oak & Redcurrant features notes of redcurrant, pink pepper, mandarin, rose and roasted oak; English Oak & Hazelnut is a composition of green hazelnut, cedar, vetiver, amber and roasted oak.

Even before I had a chance to smell this fragrance duo, I was captivated by the promotional imagery, with its sepia-tinted images of androgynous models perched in enormous oak trees…

Diptyque L’Autre ~ fragrance review

Posted by Kevin on 20 September 2017 14 Comments

“Capturing the memory of long walks through the spice markets of Damascus, L’Autre is a dry, sensual blend that recreates all the mesmerizing magic found in the rich landscape of the Orient,” says Diptyque of its second perfume, released in 1973.

I associate the name L’Autre* (The Other) — given the supposed fragrance inspiration — as representing separateness: a tourist surrounded by new sights and sounds and smells and regarding himself or those around him as The Other. “Autre” in my French dictionary takes up half a page, so interpretations may vary! Certainly given L’Autre’s bold nature, many smelling it, including perfume lovers, may recoil and feel L’Autre is The Other…

Ineke Idyllwild ~ fragrance review

Posted by Robin on 19 September 2017 29 Comments

giants

Ineke’s new Idyllwild is the ninth fragrance in the brand’s alphabetical series, and it’s worth reading the brand’s description, because it says exactly what Idyllwild is all about:

A visit to Idyllwild, a small mountain town in California with the prettiest of names, was the starting point in this scent composition…
