Timothy Han Edition Perfumes The Decay of the Angel ~ fragrance review

Posted by Kevin on 4 October 2017 23 Comments

Timothy Han Edition Perfumes The Decay of the Angel1 was inspired by the novel of the same name by Yukio Mishima. It is the fourth novel in Mishima’s The Sea of Fertility cycle. In The Decay of the Angel, a wealthy, retired judge, Shigekuni Honda, adopts a handsome (but bad-to-the-bone) teenager, Tōru Yasunaga, who Honda believes is the reincarnation of a friend who died young. Honda wants to save Tōru from an early death — evil, sadness and humiliation ensue.

In college, I fell in love with Japanese Buddhist art. Studying Buddhist sculpture led me to Japanese literature and films. I dutifully paid attention to (read and watched) Mishima and Akira Kurosawa; they were spoken of and written about more than other Japanese writers and filmmakers of their time periods…

Byredo Gypsy Water ~ fragrance review

Posted by Angela on 2 October 2017 30 Comments

Byredo Gypsy Water Eau de Parfum

Byredo Gypsy Water has been around since 2008, but it wasn’t until a few weeks ago that I finally tried it. A friend gave me a Gypsy Water travel spray, and it’s been living on my dresser.

Gypsy Water is clearly popular. Byredo offers a whole bathroom counter’s worth of body products to go with it. I understand why, and I often find myself reaching for a quick spritz. But the reasons I reach for it are exactly why I won’t be buying a bottle, especially at its price…

The freebiemeet, episode 9

Posted by Robin on 30 September 2017 95 Comments — Comments are closed

viola

The freebiemeet is open! Our rules changed with episode 8; if you have any questions, please post them under The freebiemeet rules. And PLEASE read the instructions, even if you’ve read them before! Really, pretty please, with sugar on top! There’s not even that many of them, and you will save us all so much time and confusion. This is not that hard. Plus, it’s free stuff! It’s all good, but it’s even better if you read the instructions.

For people who would like to chat in addition to, or instead of, giving and getting free stuff, there will be a poll along shortly.

If you have perfume-related items you’d like to give away (as opposed to swap for something else), and if you’re reasonably sure you can mail your items within the next month, feel free to list them below in the comments AFTER reading the instructions…

Bruno Fazzolari Feu Secret & Cire Trudon Bruma ~ quick fragrance reviews

Bruno Fazzolari Feu Secret & Cire Trudon Bruma

As September draws to a close — where has this year gone? — I’m trying to catch up on the year’s releases. Here are two more, and look for more multi-scent reviews over the coming month.

Bruno Fazzolari Feu Secret

Secret fire of the alchemists: the elusive scent of iris root smolders with spice, cedar and smoke in a transformative hidden fire. Bright, joyful, ardent.

***

My goal with Feu Secret was to allow a sort of hidden warmth to shine through the cool surface of orris butter and to stay true to the rooty-woody aspects that I find so compelling.1

Feu Secret is from artist and indie perfumer Bruno Fazzolari, and I’m surprised I haven’t seen more mention of it in the comments here…

Amouage Figment Man ~ fragrance review

Posted by Kevin on 26 September 2017 30 Comments

Bhutan

Amouage Figment Man* is a weird perfume. During the week I wore it, people — who (I believe) didn’t realize they were commenting on my fragrance — said things like: “We must have had another garbage disposal problem!” (in the kitchen at work as I made an espresso); “Is that pee?” (person sniffing in the parking garage elevator…how rude!) Another stranger, behind me, on the ‘down’ escalator at the library, asked their companion: “What’s that sickening smell?” (The library smelled fine to me.)

For those who know my tastes, you can probably guess: I like Figment Man…
