Diptyque Eau Lente ~ fragrance review

Posted by Kevin on 8 November 2017 41 Comments

rose

During the days I wrote this post: there were snow flurries and the temperature in Seattle went into the 20s (Fahrenheit); we set the clocks back an hour — the loooooong dark days crept up on me; I picked my last two roses of the year (images at the top of the post); and lots of our delicate plants, including a huge tree fern, were rolled into the garage for the freezing nights, starting a cycle of In, Out, In, Out that will go on till March or April. (Protecting the plants is worth it when summer arrives and the garden is full of scents you normally don’t encounter in the Pacific Northwest.)

‘Tis the time for a supine, and warming, fragrance to wear as I dream of milder weather and start the list of plants I’ll grow next year. Diptyque Eau Lente is a perfect perfume to enjoy as I peruse fat and heavy garden design books and seed catalogs, and re-read my favorite books that celebrate summer…

Jean Paul Gaultier Scandal ~ fragrance review

Posted by Robin on 7 November 2017 16 Comments

Jean Paul Gaultier Scandal brand image

The basics: Scandal is the latest from Jean Paul Gaultier, and it purports to be a honey chypre combining an ‘elegant aura’ with the ‘spirit of Pigalle‘, and reflecting the designer’s “vision and feeling about femininity”.1 It’s the brand’s first pillar under licensing arrangements with Puig.

The backstory: Like many feminine fragrances on the market, Scandal purports to reflect the dichotomy in the lives of women — they might want to do responsible things during the day, like hold down jobs and whatnot, and then feel sexy at night. Quelle surprise, right? In this case, Scandal tells the story of Madame La Ministre, who stays out all night partying, gets into her limo, cuts off her evening clothes with scissors, scooches into her business wear, and then steps out of the car at work, where the press is already waiting for her…

Shalini Jardin Nocturne ~ fragrance review

Posted by Angela on 6 November 2017 9 Comments

Shalini Jardin Nocturne

My fragrance is inspired by the night air of Dubai. Driving during the night in the city with the stars above, the warm desert air scented with the Oud that ceremoniously burns, caresses your skin.

This quote is from the PR materials accompanying my sample of Shalini Jardin Nocturne. Right now, I’m about as far from a Dubai night as you can get. I can’t drive anywhere, let alone in Dubai, because my 31-year-old pickup truck is in the shop. I live in the soggy Pacific Northwest, not a desert, and the only thing ceremoniously burning might be my toast…

Kelly & Jones Mezcal Blanca and Mezcal Negra ~ fragrance reviews

Posted by Jessica on 2 November 2017 8 Comments

Kelly & Jones Mezcal Blanca and Mezcal Negra

I had an opportunity to sample Kelly & Jones’ Notes of Wine Collection (now known as the Reserve Collection) when it was launched in 2012, and I’m not quite sure why I never got around to reviewing it. I liked the concept, which felt very fresh at that moment, and I particularly enjoyed the Riesling and Pinot Grigio blends. In any case, I’ve been following this indie brand’s gradual, well-paced evolution, which now includes a collection inspired by the agave-derived spirit called mezcal.

The Reserve Collection was originally sparked by visits to vineyards and wine-tasting sessions, and the Mezcal Collection explores “a new type of terroir” inspired by work and travel in Mexico. It’s comprised of two fragrances designed to “take you into the agave fields and palenques—local distilleries—of Oaxaca. Each essence captures the aromas of various types of mezcal, and its wide range of tasting notes.” Mezcal Blanca is “a blend of sheer citrus and solar resins,” with notes of peppercorn, palm, sea salt, juniper and star anise. Mezcal Negra is “a blend of smoked woods and mystical spice,” with notes of pine, black lime, guaiac wood, cajeta and clary sage. Both scents can be shared by women and men, and both are a little more abstract than the wine-inflected blends of the Reserve Collection…

Mirus The Elysian Fields ~ fragrance review

Posted by Kevin on 1 November 2017 7 Comments

lavender

I assume Mirus The Elysian Fields1 is named after Elysium, not The Elysian Fields in Hoboken, New Jersey. But whether you’re a fan of happy (dead) Greek (im)mortals or baseball legend, this perfume offers some afterlife/outdoorsy sweetness.

Like many flowers (tuberose, peony, freesia, carnation, ylang-ylang), I prefer lavender in my garden, not on my person. But there are always exceptions, right? I was immediately pleased by The Elysian Fields, and it contains a good dose of lavender…
