Frassai Verano Porteno, Tian Di & Blondine ~ fragrance reviews

Posted by Angela on 20 November 2017 12 Comments

Frassaï Verano Porteño and Tian Di

I can’t tell you how often I’ve read a perfume’s list of notes and thought I was sure how it would come out — then been completely surprised once I smelled it. Each of these fragrances by Frassaï set me up to expect one thing, then delivered another. (A good reason not to buy unsniffed, no matter how radiant the reviews.)

Natalia Outeda, Frassaï’s founder, was born in Buenos Aires and has a background in fragrance development, floral design, and jewelry design. Fittingly, Frassaï sells jewelry with an organic inspiration, scented candles, and, now, three Eaux de Parfum — Verano Porteño, Tian Di and Blondine.

So, let’s get down to it…

Imaginary Authors O, Unknown! ~ fragrance review

Posted by Robin on 17 November 2017 66 Comments

The backstory: Like the other fragrances from indie brand Imaginary Authors, O, Unknown! was inspired by an imaginary book by an imaginary author. Here’s the book blurb:

At age 65, when famed explorer and author Philip Sava was given less than a year to live, he set off from his home in Madagascar for parts unknown. Leaving all his belongings behind, he set off on foot, hopped a freighter across the Indian Ocean, and wandered into the Bangladesh wilderness….

Aureum Botanica Ruzha, Gajra & Hanae ~ fragrance reviews

Posted by Kevin on 15 November 2017 11 Comments

Los Angeles-based Aureum Botanica’s three new Eaux de Parfum are “composed entirely of natural ingredients and are free of synthetic aroma chemicals.” My nose tells me this is true, but I’m a man, not a machine! Aureum Botanica is part of Capsule Parfumerie, a multi-brand fragrance house that includes Capsule Parfums, Fiele Fragrances (I have several favorites from this line), Saguara Perfumes, Musc et Madame and Litoralle Aromatica…

Trish McEvoy 100 ~ fragrance review with an aside on beauty

Posted by Angela on 13 November 2017 30 Comments

Weekends, I work at a shop that brings in a diverse clientele, from students and artists to society matrons and tourists. A few weeks ago, late in the afternoon when the store was quiet, a woman came in looking for Chinese lanterns. She was tall and lumpy and didn’t wear makeup. She wore a strange hat that curved around her face, a satin baseball jacket embroidered with flowers, and striped pants that had seen better days. She carried a Prada handbag worth more than my car.1

Was the woman conventionally pretty? No. But she was riveting. Besides owning her own style, she was kind and authentic. (I later discovered she’s a famous photographer. You’ve probably seen her work on album covers.2)

Why am I telling this story? Because it made me realize how banal beauty can be. Look at the covers of celebrity magazines. The actresses look almost exactly the same. Thanks to dieting, plastic surgery, stylists, and personal trainers, Hollywood is an assembly line of interchangeable starlets. Worse, a lot of women on the street spend a lot of money to to achieve this kind of banality…

Gallivant Amsterdam ~ fragrance review

Posted by Jessica on 9 November 2017 6 Comments

black tulips

London-based niche line Gallivant is back with two new fragrances, Amsterdam and Berlin, bringing its total of olfactory “urban explorations” to six. When I tried Gallivant’s initial four scents, Brooklyn was the one that really won me over. (I wore it frequently last summer.) Now I’m intrigued by Amsterdam, “a genre-defying floral, spicy, woody, ambery fragrance” developed by perfumer Giorgia Navarra. Amsterdam’s composition includes top notes of elemi, schinus molle CO2 extract, pepper and saffron; a heart of tulip and rose; and a base of cedar, musk, sandalwood and amber.

Although I’ve never been to Amsterdam, I enjoyed reading this description as I was wearing the fragrance: “Autumn going into winter. The freedom of cycling, past the former spice warehouses of the Warmoesstraat to a canalside apartment on Prinsengracht on the elegant south side of the city. . . .Flowers in the window. Cake and feeling indulged. Beautifully made wooden furniture. Dark hues on the walls.” Gallivant promises that Amsterdam offers an element of gezellig…
