Our Modern Lives Red, Alpha & Beta ~ fragrance reviews

Posted by Jessica on 16 March 2018 6 Comments

If you’re a fan of indie perfumer Sarah McCartney, creator of 4160 Tuesdays, you may already know that she recently introduced a new collection called Our Modern Lives. The collection includes seven all-natural botanical perfumes named for colors and moods, plus two synthetic, hypoallergenic fragrances that can be worn alone or layered with the naturals. It’s an ingenious concept. With this collection, we’re able to choose or combine at will.

I’m slowly working my way through Our Modern Lives’ spectrum of natural fragrances; at the moment, Red (whose mood is “Gratitude” and theme is “Harvest”) is my favorite…

Estee Lauder White Linen ~ fragrance review

Estée Lauder White Linen vintage advert

Mention Estée Lauder Youth Dew, and a chorus of “my grandma wore that!” arises. Estée Lauder White Linen might get a similar response, but this time about mothers, especially if those mothers joined the PTA, kept a tidy garden, and knew how to spray-starch a shirt. At one time, it seemed like every shopping mall exuded White Linen. Now, you rarely smell it, except maybe when you lean in to kiss Aunt Phyllis on the cheek.

Sophia Grojsman (the nose behind Estée Lauder Beautiful and Spellbound, Lancôme Trésor and Yves Saint Laurent Paris, among others) developed White Linen, and it launched in 1978…

Hermes Myrrhe Eglantine ~ fragrance review

Posted by Robin on 8 March 2018 39 Comments

Myrrhe Églantine is one of the five new Hermessence fragrances from Hermès. They’re the first additions to the series from house perfumer Christine Nagel, and before you go complaining about the five, don’t forget that the Hermessences debuted under Jean-Claude Ellena — way back in 2004, a kabillion perfumes ago! — with four: Ambre Narguile, Poivre Samarcande, Rose Ikebana, Vetiver Tonka. And, happily for me, I’m only going to worry about three of the new ones, since two are expensive perfume oils I’ll probably never manage to get my hands on. As for Agar Ebène, Cèdre Sambac and Myrrhe Églantine, I bought those unsniffed right away, in the (swap-bait) 15 ml travel sizes. I’m starting with Myrrhe Églantine, largely because I was curious what Nagel would do with it, given that there’s already a rose in the series.

Hermès is a luxury house, and they do luxury press jaunts to match,1 but they’re not known for providing the sort of persnickety details that perfumistas adore, like say, a list of notes…

Comme des Garcons Eau de Cologne & Oriza L. Legrand Cologne Extra-Vielle ~ fragrance reviews

Soon, Seattle will have its one week of spring followed by a long, hot, dry summer (such is the new ‘normal’ in the climate-changing world). As I gear up for warm weather, I start to test citrus-y Eaux de Cologne, looking for refreshing, sparkling, natural-smelling perfumes to wear when the going gets sultry. These fragrances need not last longer than 10 minutes: I use them most right out of the shower (before putting on a stronger perfume) or at bedtime (when long-lasting fragrances are verboten).

Comme des Garçons has reissued its 1994 1996 Eau de Cologne as part of the Olfactory Library series…

St. Clair Scents First Cut, Frost & Gardener’s Glove ~ fragrance reviews

Posted by Jessica on 1 March 2018 14 Comments

I’m a city person: I feel total kinship with the poet Frank O’Hara when he says, “I can’t even enjoy a blade of grass unless I know there’s a subway handy, or a record store or some other sign that people do not totally regret life.”1 With the exception of occasional family visits to non-metropolitan areas, I generally prefer to limit my pastoral experiences to art and fragrances that evoke the great outdoors…
