Serge Lutens Le Participe Passe ~ fragrance review

Posted by Kevin on 7 November 2018 46 Comments

This summer I came across the entire Serge Lutens Collection Noir in a boutique where I could smell them at my own pace and in peace. In this repackaged collection reside many of my favorite Lutens’ fragrances; I’ll name just two: Ambre Sultan and Chergui. As I sniffed, something was wrong. First, I felt the bottles; they were not hot to the touch. Next, I gauged their placement; no way the sun could reach them. Then I inspected the packaging closely: were these knock-offs? (Didn’t seem to be; the store I was in is respected.) I realized the bad perfume I was experiencing was likely due to recent reformulations and I’m guessing we can’t blame IFRA this time around but, perhaps, a cynical, budget-cutting philosophy at Shiseido. Who knows?

Ambre Sultan has lost all its glory…

Burberry Her ~ quick fragrance review

Posted by Robin on 2 November 2018 6 Comments

The background: Burberry’s first pillar fragrance since the license moved from InterParfums to Coty, Burberry Her aims to evoke the youth, bustle, energy and creativity of London for women who are ‘Londoners at heart’. It also appears to be aimed at increasing Burberry’s share of the lucrative Asian market.

The juice: Burberry Her was developed by perfumer Francis Kurkdjian, who also did the last Burberry feminine pillar, 2014’s My Burberry. Burberry Her is described as a fruity floral gourmand…

Bruno Fazzolari Vetiverissimo ~ fragrance review

Posted by Angela on 29 October 2018 29 Comments

Over the summer, a friend’s son, Anders, turned 13 years old. He’s a stylish kid — he likes to raid his departed grandpa’s closet for ascots and Gucci sunglasses and send the resulting selfies to his mom. He also enjoys the company of middle-aged women, so he asked to host his birthday party at my house.

He was impressed by my perfume collection. I suggested he try a spritz of Guerlain Vetiver. Now, Anders doesn’t have a lot of experience with perfume. When he was a kindergartner, he found a bottle of something Avon that he called his “man cologne” for a few weeks, but that’s it…

The splitmeet (episode 10) is open for business. PLEASE read the instructions! For people who would like to chat in addition to, or instead of, splitting, there will be a poll along shortly.

Don’t know what a bottle split is, or you know but you’ve never tried it? See here.

Please note that the intention of the splitmeet is to split newly purchased bottles of perfume, not to sell decants of fragrances already in your collection! Anyone can join a split, but only people with current, active reader accounts may host splits. Update: in other words, you cannot host a split if you have never commented here before the day the splitmeet opens…

Parfums de Nicolai Neroli Intense & Thymes Neroli Sol Body Lotion ~ fragrance & body product review

Posted by Jessica on 18 October 2018 8 Comments

I may wear rose more often than any other floral note in my fragrances, but I’m also very fond of violet and carnation, and sometimes I really crave an orange blossom perfume. Parfums de Nicolaï recently launched Néroli Intense, Patricia de Nicolaï’s tribute to her own “passion for the orange flower,” and since this house is one I respect, I was looking forward to trying this new scent.

Néroli Intense’s composition includes notes of mandarin, neroli, tarragon, pittosporum flower, petitgrain, beeswax, patchouli and white musk. It does indeed evoke the “different olfactory properties” of the bitter orange tree, while remaining coherent and tightly constructed. Its petitgrain note — evoking the oil distilled from the twigs of the bitter orange tree — is green and raspy, and takes the lead after Néroli Intense is applied to skin…
