Byredo Sundazed ~ fragrance review

Posted by Kevin on 8 May 2019 30 Comments

Summer bliss…solar worship…a mythical undoing of body and mind…psychosomatic journey of free love…endorphin rush of sugar…cascade of white musk.

Byredo’s string of words conjures a Sun-worshiper on a hot day, the very day the devotee discovers the sun is NOT a god after all, but an inducer of heat stroke. Aided by an overdose of Mountain Dew, vanilla cupcakes and white musk, our heroine (or hero) tries to banish the pain of reality by flirting with sexy beach-goers — newfound spiritual emptiness prompts horniness.

Stated more simply: Byredo just released Sundazed…

Eau d’Italie Rosa Greta, Ex Nihilo Rose Hubris, MCMC Fragrances Maine, Atelier des Ors Rose Omeyyade ~ short fragrance reviews

Posted by Jessica on 3 May 2019 11 Comments

I think many of us have a box or bowl of perfume samples that we’ve tried once or twice, weren’t quite sure about and plan to try again someday — the “purgatory basket,” as Robin dubbed it years ago. I can never resist trying rose-inspired fragrances, even ones that I have a sneaking suspicion I might not actually like, so I inevitably end up with more than a few semi-forgotten rose samples rattling around my desk.

Here are brief reviews of four scents I recently plucked from sample limbo and gave another wearing…

True Love and Trulove Perfume

Posted by Angela on 30 April 2019 24 Comments

Looking to get him to ask you out? Desperate to regain your husband’s attention? Or maybe you simply want men killing each other to get at you? David J. Trulove can help.

David J. Trulove is the purported head of Trulove Perfume. Trulove perfume ads peppered comic books in the 1950s. Like many ads for fragrance today, they promise seduction and, curiously, bypass what the perfume actually smells like. But Mr. Trulove doesn’t mess around with fancy models in diaphonous gowns and vague references to the modern woman. No, he goes right to the meat: love and power…

Hermes Un Jardin sur la Lagune ~ fragrance review

Posted by Robin on 26 April 2019 56 Comments

A bit of background: The sixth in the Hermès Jardin series, and the first from perfumer Christine Nagel, who took over as the house perfumer in 2016.

The inspiration: The Jardin series perfumes generally find an inspiration, however manufactured it might be (remember The Perfect Scent: A Year Behind the Scenes of the Perfume Industry in Paris and New York by Chandler Burr?), in some exotic garden someplace else — that is, not in New Jersey (which really does have lovely gardens, but you know what I mean), or your own backyard…

Diptyque Eau de Minthe ~ fragrance review

Posted by Kevin on 24 April 2019 29 Comments

If I’d been presented with Diptyque’s new Eau de Minthé* in an unmarked vial, after the first sniff I’d have bet it was a vintage fougère perfume from the 1960s or 1970s. Eau de Minthé is hairy from eyebrows to toes, and brimming with testosterone.

Eau de Minthé goes on with a blast of bergamot mixing with peppery greens (geranium leaf is noticeable, too). As Eau de Minthé skids into mid-development I get scented hints of rose water, green tea(?), “chewing-gum” spearmint and Life Savers® wintergreen candy…
