The splitmeet, episode 12

Posted by Robin on 26 October 2019 123 Comments — Comments are closed

orchid-thirds

The splitmeet (episode 12) is open for business. PLEASE read the instructions! For people who would like to chat in addition to, or instead of, splitting, there will be a poll along shortly.

Don’t know what a bottle split is, or you know but you’ve never tried it? See here.

Please note that the intention of the splitmeet is to split newly purchased bottles of perfume, not to sell decants of fragrances already in your collection! Anyone can join a split, but only people with current, active reader accounts may host splits. Update: in other words, you cannot host a split if you have never commented here before the day the splitmeet opens…

Inside the Perfume Cabinet ~ Nancy

Posted by Angela on 21 October 2019 33 Comments

“My whole life, I’ve hated the smell of flowers in perfume,” Nancy says. Nancy, a vibrant 60-ish artist specializing in fine jewelry, is tall and striking and favors chic black tunics and bold glasses. Comme des Garçons would do well to hire her for an ad campaign.

She grew up in Kalamazoo, Michigan, where her mother wore Chanel No. 5. I ask her if that’s why she doesn’t like floral scents. “Maybe,” she says. Her grandmother smelled of Camay soap and powder…

Jul et Mad Stairway to Heaven ~ fragrance review

Posted by Jessica on 17 October 2019 6 Comments

Okay, just do it: sing a few lines of the Led Zeppelin song and get it out of your system. Despite what you may have expected (or hoped), Jul et Mad’s Stairway to Heaven has nothing to do with a lady who’s sure all that glitters is gold, etc. It was inspired instead by a trek into Nepal’s Annapurna mountain range that turned out to be “a veritable inner quest, in search of the mysteries of life, of serenity, of absolute happiness on the Summits of the Gods…” (Then again, that does sound pretty Zeppelinesque…)

Stairway to Heaven was developed by perfumer Cécile Zarokian and promises to evoke a “dual whiteness: pure and immaculate, but warming and enveloping.” That sounds almost like Stairway could be an “Eau Chaude,” in the tradition of Jean-Claude Ellena’s L’Eau d’Hiver for Frédéric Malle…

Frederic Malle Rose & Cuir ~ fragrance review

Posted by Kevin on 9 October 2019 25 Comments

I’ve never met perfumer Jean-Claude Ellena, but from what I’ve seen, heard and read (interviews, his own books) I like him. I enjoy (and own) many of his perfumes and, like Georgia O’Keeffe, Ellena shows that wrinkles do not tarnish sex appeal or good looks. Best of all, Ellena comes across as unpretentious, sensible, fun.

Enter stage left: Mr. Serious (aka Frédéric Malle).

In Frédéric Malle’s video of the making of Rose & Cuir,* Malle talks of Ellena’s “periods” as a perfumer…

Papillon Bengale Rouge ~ fragrance review

Posted by Angela on 7 October 2019 22 Comments

Say you adore Guerlain Shalimar’s feel of silk velvet amber and stained glass, but its lemon is too sharp or its civet turns your stomach. Or maybe Shalimar is too recognizably Shalimar, and you don’t want to be so easy to peg. It could be you simply crave a throwback oriental fragrance with more sophistication than the average department store amber. If so, try a sniff of Papillon Bengale Rouge…
