viola

The freebiemeet is open! PLEASE read the instructions, even if you’ve read them before! Really, pretty please, with sugar on top! There’s not even that many of them, and you will save us all so much time and confusion. This is not that hard. Plus, it’s free stuff! It’s all good, but it’s even better if you read the instructions. If you have any questions, please post them here.

Dawn Spencer Hurwitz MaccaBees ~ fragrance review

Posted by Jessica on 10 January 2020 10 Comments

The holiday season has wound down and we’re more than a week into January, but I’m still catching up on late 2019 in many areas of my life. This effort includes a trial of MaccaBees, the nineteenth annual Holiday scent from indie perfumer Dawn Spencer Hurwitz. Referring to the Maccabean Revolt and the lighting of the Hanukkah menorah, MaccaBees “celebrates the candles, and the oil, that have illuminated our world for thousands of years, as well as the light and warmth within us that they represent.” Its name is also a play on “bees,” hinting at the beeswax used for candles and the beeswax and honey notes in this fragrance…

The Monday Mail ~ help Rena go perfume shopping in Brussels

Posted by Robin on 6 January 2020 11 Comments

Rena (some of you know her as thegoddessrena) is back for her third Monday Mail (see 2012 and 2013). She’s heading to Brussels at the end of the month, and hopes to do some perfume shopping while her husband attends a conference. She wants to buy 2 or 3 fragrances, and her total budget tops out at $600.

She prefers rich, full scents…

Parfum d’Empire Immortelle Corse ~ fragrance review

Posted by Angela on 30 December 2019 22 Comments

Imagine a spotlight trained on a woman at the center of a dark stage. Music starts — something melodic and gentle — and the performer sways in her diaphanous gown. After this dreamy introduction, burlesque horns kick in, and, in a move you’ve seen a hundred times, the woman rips away her evening dress to reveal a strapless sequinned get-up. That’s Parfum d’Empire Immortelle Corse in a nutshell.

Maybe comparing the fragrance to a Broadway number is going too far, since it’s more sun-kissed peasant1 than Liza Minelli, but you get the idea…

Les Parfums de Rosine Ballerina No. 5 ~ fragrance review

Posted by Jessica on 27 December 2019 10 Comments

How quickly they grow up! It seems like yesterday I was trying out Les Parfums de Rosine’s “tender and innocent” Ballerina No. 1 and now we’re already up to the “shimmering and rich” Ballerina No. 5. Like other Ballerinas in this series, No. 5 was inspired by a specific ballet — in this case, La Bayadère, which made its debut in 1877 with music by Leonard Minkus and choreography by Marius Petipa. La Bayadère is an opulent but tragic tale of a romance between a beautiful bayadère (temple dancer) and a warrior.

La Bayadère‘s passion-fueled plot and its Indian location help to set the scene for this rose-centered perfume…
