Arquiste Misfit ~ fragrance review

Posted by Jessica on 14 May 2020 19 Comments

Earlier this year, Arquiste celebrated its tenth anniversary and launched Misfit, a patchouli fragrance developed by perfumer Rodrigo Flores-Roux. And one morning soon after Misfit’s launch, I met with Arquiste founder Carlos Huber in his Manhattan apartment and we spoke in his dining room, which also serves as a non-typical and beautifully appointed meeting-space.

Once I’d had a chance to admire some of the room’s details (pieces of black jasperware, a cluster of decorative obelisks, wallpaper patterned with a fantastic scene of Indian gardens), Carlos gave me a run-through of Misfit’s notes and backstory. Our conversation drifted into a few tangents about nineteenth-century perfumery, fashion and architecture. I’ve always admired Arquiste’s poetic yet accurate use of historical narratives (I can’t think of any other perfumery whose website includes a bibliography!), and it was a treat to chat with someone whose interests overlap so much with mine.

While I’ve been trying and trying to write this review over the past month, and making little progress, I gradually realized that the memory of that visit has been haunting me. As we enter our ninth week of lockdown here in the New York City metro area, that morning now seems inconceivable…

Atelier Des Ors Riviera Lazuli & Pomelo Riviera ~ fragrance reviews

Posted by Kevin on 6 May 2020 20 Comments

Like a human raccoon, I was attracted to Atelier Des Ors‘ Riviera line of perfumes because of their beautiful blue bottles — with gold flakes in the bottom: sparkly! Since I’m always in the market for a fresh citrus cologne, I sampled two from the collection with notes that appealed to me (in descriptions, anyway).

Pomelo Riviera: bergamot, grapefruit, orange, jasmine, salty notes, rose, cedar

Pomelo Riviera starts with an old-fashioned mosquito repellent scent…

The Monday Mail ~ help Robin find a new fragrance

Posted by Robin on 27 April 2020 48 Comments

Robin participated in the Monday Mail back in 2014, looking for two perfect fragrances: one for everyday and one for special occasions. Since then, her life has changed and so has her perfume collection, but she still doesn’t have her special fragrances. So, let’s try again! Robin wants complex, beautiful, feminine scents, preferably not mainstream, that fit her personality and style. Ideally, she would like to sniff her own arm and swoon. The fragrances should be grown-up but not too mature, youthful but not teenager-ish. She will spend what she has to. Here is what we know about Robin…

Francesca Bianchi Etruscan Water ~ fragrance review

Posted by Kevin on 22 April 2020 12 Comments

Perfumer Francesca Bianchi lives in Amsterdam but her perfumes are produced and bottled in Italy. Over the last months, I’ve heard lots of positive mentions of her Etruscan Water* fragrance online and found myself some samples. Bianchi describes Etruscan Water like this:

…being born and raised in Tuscany, we could go to the beach in the South of the region, where hundreds of years ago our forefathers, the Etruscans, used to live. In order to access … the most stunning, well hidden small bays…offering the most transparent water, there was a 30 minute walk through the woods. The smell of typical Mediterranean vegetation is charming…

Perfume and Pandemic

Posted by Angela on 13 April 2020 138 Comments

By now, we’re all hip to the pandemic. We hole ourselves up, register the death toll, panic over our checkbooks, and take our temperatures. I sincerely hope every one of you is healthy, and that your loved ones are, too. Stay home, and take care of yourselves.

But, let me drop my usual blog persona and get real. I live alone, and I’ve been in social isolation for almost four weeks now. I’ve had a varied life, from waitress to congressional investigator, but today my living comes partly from writing and partly from being a shopgirl. Half of my income vanished with the pandemic, and the other half is on life support. I have my moments, and although I’m not at all a cryer, I’ve suffered a few bouts lately.

Yet, I feel lucky. I’m healthy. I enjoy my own company. I live well on a dime, and, better, I know how to appreciate the little things in life…
