The smell of fresh wet grass and damp earth

Sir John Everett Millais’s The Blind Girl from 1854-56 – showing a blind girl and her companion resting beside a meadow beneath dark rain clouds and a double rainbow– will be accompanied by the smell of fresh wet grass and damp earth, evoking English countryside after the rain.

One of Leonardo’s designs for a burning device was modeled after a bird known as an oiselet de cyphre. The exhibition features a modern reconstruction, displayed alongside the artist’s writings. Visitors can also smell the black, amber necklace worn by the woman depicted in his 1489 painting Lady with an Ermine, which gives off a sweet, earthy odor.

It doesn’t really create a collaborative spirit

“They still make perfumers compete against each other, even within the same house,” says Dawn Goldworm, an olfactive expert who has been friends with Kurkdjian for over 20 years. “So at Firmenich, you have a lot of perfumers competing against each other on projects,” she explains, referring to the leading French firm, “but they’re also competing against perfumers at Givaudan, International Flavors & Fragrances, and Takasago. It doesn’t really create a collaborative spirit.”

A worldwide trend

This appears to be a worldwide trend. Scent-doused Europe — which accounted for 28 per cent of the perfume market in 2023 according to Euromonitor — has managed double-digit sales growth every year since the pandemic. In the US, where perfume has less of a day-to-day tradition, penetration has doubled.

Better still, the more expensive end of the market has been outperforming cheaper perfumes. In the US, prestige fragrance grew by 12 per cent in 2023 compared to the mass market’s 4 per cent, on Circana data.
