The path to becoming a perfumer has been relatively narrow

Posted by Robin on 17 December 2024 Leave a Comment

Traditionally, the path to becoming a perfumer has been relatively narrow, as Ashley Santiago was lucky enough to learn early on. She began reading perfume blogs as a teen and in college, got a job at Ministry of Scent, a fragrance boutique in San Francisco. There, she met perfumers who encouraged her to get a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, often a prerequisite to pursue a master’s in perfumery.

Santiago took their advice and, after graduating from San Francisco State University in 2016, embarked on her master’s in France, home to the holy trinity of perfume schools: ISIPCA (where Santiago went), École Supérieure du Parfum et de la Cosmétique, and Grasse Institute of Perfumery. These institutions “feed” graduates into the world’s seven major fragrance houses — Givaudan, DSM-Firmenich, International Flavors and Fragrances (IFF), Mane, Robertet, Takasago, and Symrise — which are responsible for creating the scent and flavor of virtually everything you consume, from cleaning supplies to energy drinks to luxury perfume.

An aroma that can be quite pleasant

The first sign of an attack is usually a smell, an aroma that can be quite pleasant, like a freshly cut Christmas tree. It emanates from some of the deepest swamps and most hidden recesses of Minnesota’s forests. But along with that aroma, there is something else in the air, something sweet to a destructive type of bark beetle. It’s a trail of pheromones signaling that it is time to feast.

Scientists at the University of Minnesota have identified the chemicals and compounds that eastern larch beetles produce to communicate with one other.

As the seasons change

Undeniably, their perfumes are made and sold in a manner far different from a fragrance you might pick out at a department store or at Sephora.

Ffern, which Mr. Mears started in 2016, is a subscription service. A space on the ledger, as it’s called, costs $129 per season and signifies that you want a bottle from the next batch. From then on, you’ll get a new scent four times a year, as the seasons change.

Fragrance is off to a strong start

Posted by Robin on 12 December 2024 Leave a Comment

Black Friday numbers indicate fragrance is off to a strong start this holiday season, with Circana reporting fragrance unit sales grew 11 percent during the week of Black Friday, outpacing the total beauty industry’s unit sales growth of 6 percent.

According to Adobe Digital Insights, sample and discovery sets comprised roughly 27 percent of fragrance sales during the five-day period between Thanksgiving and Cyber Monday this year. Steep discounts, meanwhile, drove consumers to purchase fragrance offerings that were “about 26 percent more expensive, on average, than those they were buying in October,” said Vivek Pandya, lead analyst, Adobe Digital Insights.
