Putricia

But to fans of this specimen, she’s Putricia -- a portmanteau of “putrid” and “Patricia” eagerly adopted by her followers who, naturally, call themselves Putricians. For a week, she has graced a stately and gothic display in front of a purple curtain and wreathed in mist from a humidifier at the Royal Sydney Botanic Garden.

Her rise to fame has been rapid, with up to 20,000 admirers filing past for a moment in her increasingly pungent presence.

But, yeah, when I was talking to Francis [Kurkdjian, Dior’s perfume creation director], we did this behind-the-scenes making-of-the-scent video, and they asked me to describe it. And like every single ingredient I said had nothing to do with the scent—at all. In fact, both this one and the last Dior Homme, I was like, “It smells like pencils,” and Francis was like ...“Okay?”

A pine-smelling chemical

In a gleaming laboratory in Edinburgh, robotic machines whirr and mix. The final product that they are creating will be a pine-smelling chemical that can be used as an ingredient in perfumes. But the starting point is very different: a brown, gloopy, fat mixture, recently fished out from below ground - fatbergs.
