A frequent purchasing behavior

Posted by Robin on 5 December 2025 2 Comments

What once would have been unthinkable—choosing a perfume without trying it—has now become a frequent purchasing behavior, driven by emotional connection rather than physical sampling. “This goes against everything” Interparfums has done for the past four decades, [Jean] Madar continued, yet it shows how central storytelling has become in beauty—and how willing consumers are to buy if they feel aligned with a brand’s narrative.

Almost double the rate

The AI chatbot Estée Lauder Companies built for its Jo Malone London fragrance brand has a uniquely difficult task.

[...] Since a soft launch begun on Jo Malone in October, online shoppers who used the tool made purchases at almost double the rate of those who didn’t, helping Estée Lauder achieve that rare unicorn in generative AI: a tool that actually drives top-line growth.

Stress-reducing and mood-boosting

Pine contains compounds called terpenes, like α-pinene and limonene, which are touted in wellness circles for their stress-reducing and mood-boosting properties. Aromatherapy brands frequently promote pine essential oils with terms like “refreshing” and “uplifting,” suggesting there’s something inherently calming in the chemistry of the tree itself.

But that idea doesn’t hold up scientifically, according to [neuroscientist Dr. Rachel] Herz. She says the perception of scent occurs in the amygdala-hippocampal complex, otherwise known as the primary olfactory cortex. It is this mechanism that drives pleasant experiences around particular scents.

The beginning of Warhol’s love of fragrance

Jessica Murphy, a fragrance culture writer, pinpointed the beginning of Warhol’s love of fragrance to his Catholic upbringing. Warhol attended a weekly mass with his devout mother at his local Byzantine Catholic church in Pittsburgh. “The mass was enhanced with candlelight, vocal chants, and rich incenses… I can completely understand how Warhol’s love of objects, including his collection of perfume bottles, may have been tied to that upbringing,” Murphy told British Vogue in 2022.
