Proustian reveries originating in Bushwick

Standing five feet away, I could smell it in the air. Acrid, damp, toe-curling—a memory from my past. The nose is a powerful historian, so it took only a few seconds to place it: the stench of the rat that died in the walls of my second apartment in New York City. Because management was hesitant to punch a hole in the sheetrock to retrieve it, the corpse dried out slowly, rendering one bedroom unlivable as my roommate slept on the sofa and recouped a few weeks of rent. It had been a long time since I smelled that smell. Most Proustian reveries originating in Bushwick won't transport you anywhere you want to go.

Tom Ford Beauty’s most recent fragrance launch, Bois Pacifique, was notable for several reasons, but perhaps chief among them was the way artificial intelligence was used in its development. A digital “odour value map” was used to blend ingredients in line with a brief, marking the first time parent company Estée Lauder has gone all in on an AI-influenced formula.

US$33.9bn

The US prestige beauty market’s value reached US$33.9bn in 2024.

This was fueled by the fragrance category, which saw sales increase by 12% during the year, according to the data from consumer insights firm Circana.

Sales of prestige fragrances in department and beauty speciality retailers accounted for 28% of total prestige beauty income.
