Industrial amounts of Dior Eau Sauvage

Posted by Robin on 5 April 2025 10 Comments

Up to 30 years

Sandalwood, with its oblong light-green leaves and twiggy branches, is a semi-parasitic plant that needs a host tree. It can take up to 30 years for it to be ready for perfume oil extraction. The modern perfume industry originally used sandalwood from India, but starting in 1974, unbridled and unsustainable harvesting practices caused a precipitous drop in supply, likely driving up the cost of the wood. “There was a time when it had basically disappeared for perfumers,” [perfumer Frank] Voelkl says.

Flankers are the sequels of the perfume industry

Posted by Robin on 3 April 2025 4 Comments

If original launches like [Glossier] You are blockbusters, flankers are the sequels of the perfume industry. The history of the flanker concept goes back to launches like 1975’s Nina Ricci Signoricci 2, a redux of 1966’s Signoricci. And just as constantly expanding film universes are now standard in the movie industry, releasing a new flanker every year is a common practice for designer and masstige lines as conglomerates like L’Oréal and Coty aim to keep scents alive for new generations and demographics.

It’s got that moodiness

Posted by Robin on 2 April 2025 2 Comments

It’s got that moodiness and I think it’s quite romantic. But it’s got a kind of tough side to it as well. It reminds me of going to a really great night club, and meeting somebody fabulous. I’m not very good at remembering the names of the actual things that are in them, like tonka bean and oud. We talked about what we liked, and I took quite a lead in that, because I’m very, very olfactory driven.
