In fragrant rows

I was often distracted: ‘Don’t forget to get the bread!’

If I described the bakery as a ‘golden place’, it’s because that’s how I saw it. Part of its bright aura was due to the amber loaves of French bread – bâtards, ficelles and baguettes – waiting in fragrant rows.

Cats respond differently to the scents of their owners

But in a study published on Wednesday in the journal PLOS One, Dr. Uchiyama and his team managed to achieve some research findings in feline behavior, establishing that cats respond differently to the scents of their owners than to the odors of strangers. That suggests your feline friend knows what you smell like, in addition to what you look and sound like.

Delayed gratification

Posted by Robin on 28 May 2025 2 Comments

At the Hampton Bays home of Frédéric and Marie Malle, the water looms large, if deceptively so. Beyond swaths of wild grasses and shrubs, the East End’s famously wide sky meets the Great Peconic’s deep-blue depths in a postcard-perfect horizon line. But meander toward it and you’ll find there’s a ways to go yet, that verdant expanse concealing the steep sandy bluff and the many flights of stairs you must descend to reach the gentle tides—what is now, for the couple, a cherished act of delayed gratification.

Crazy ice cream and knee-buckling ammonia

Posted by Robin on 27 May 2025 2 Comments

Interstellar dust clouds, spinning through the spiral arms of the Milky Way, combine the smells of "crazy ice cream and knee-buckling ammonia", researchers believe. Meanwhile, in Sagittarius B2, a giant molecular cloud of gas and dust close to centre of our galaxy, you might smell "some of the prebiotic molecules that are necessary for life", says [scientist Marina] Barcenilla. "There we have things like ethanol, methanol, acetone, hydrogen sulphide and ethylene glycol – which you can use as antifreeze."
