Chipping away at barriers

Posted by Robin on 18 March 2022 Leave a Comment

By chipping away at barriers, the institute is helping reshape the practice of perfumery, often characterized by elitism and a Eurocentric perspective. To encourage outsider scent culture, Ms. Wilson-Brown’s definition of perfume is intentionally loose, as in not constricted to what one buys in a bottle. It’s “a conscious combination of aromatics for a predetermined result,” she said. “A chef could be in some way a perfumer if she combines materials for their aroma, or a florist. The advantage of this definition is that it’s inclusive.”

— Saskia Wilson-Brown's Institute for Art and Olfaction will celebrate their 10th anniversary this year. Read more in Can Scent Be Democratized? The Institute for Art and Olfaction celebrates a decade of exploring our sense of smell at The New York Times.

Surprise findings

In what they call surprise findings, Johns Hopkins Medicine scientists report that -- unlike fruit flies -- mosquitoes' odor sensing nerve cells shut down when those cells are forced to produce odor-related proteins, or receptors, on the surface of the cell. This "expression" process apparently makes the bugs able to ignore common insect repellents.

In contrast, when odor sensors in fruit flies are forced to express odor receptors, it prompts flight from some smelly situations.

The more character they have the better

Van Noten chose not to try out the fragrances with test audiences to see how they reacted to the products because “quite often they are made a little bit easier, which I didn’t want to do. The more character they have the better.”

Something that smells antique

Posted by Robin on 14 March 2022 39 Comments

While you don't want your perfume to smell too young, you also don't want it to smell too old. "Something that smells antique leans more toward overtly mature, reminding us of a 'grandma's' fragrance," says Fitz. "Women today do not act or merely resemble what 65-year-old women of the past looked like. They are bold, confident, and embrace their age and femininity."

— Embrace your age, yes, just be sure you don't smell overtly mature. For more advice, read If You're Over 65, Don't Wear This Scent, Experts Warn at Best Life.
