Lifelong preferences

One of the most interesting studies Gary Beauchamp ever saw, he says, was done a few decades ago among the Inuit, who live in Arctic and sub-Arctic Greenland, Canada and Alaska. “Their traditional food back then was dead fish and dead caribou,” he reports, “which they put into the permafrost and allowed to rot. The smell of it … it was just abominable. Awful. You couldn’t eat it.” But the study showed that Inuit adults who’d been fed the carrion as infants liked the taste; otherwise, they found it offensive. That accords with other studies by Beauchamp showing that early exposure to foods through amniotic fluid and breast milk induces lifelong preferences.

The mysterious substance in the bottle

It was sometime during the 2012 season when Alcides Escobar of the Kansas City Royals grabbed a bottle from his locker and sprayed some of its contents onto Salvador Pérez. Caught off guard, Pérez warned his fellow Venezuelan and close friend not to mess with him, punctuating his emotion with some colorful language in Spanish.

Hours later, though, Pérez was far from bothered. He collected four hits that day and smelled great in the process. The mysterious substance in the bottle, from his point of view, had become a performance-enhancer: women’s perfume.

Using waste to concoct new scents

Previously destined for a life in the trash, strawberry residue, tangerine peels, and carrot seeds are now part of the new olfactory palette of the fragrance world. After upcycling was embraced by fashion and cosmetics, it's now proving to be a new playground for perfumers who not only aim to do better for the plane but are increasingly using waste to concoct new scents.
