Edit a little more tightly

Posted by Robin on 27 August 2025 5 Comments

[Our own Dr. Jessica] Murphy likened Printemps New York’s fragrance section to that of the since-closed Henri Bendel, which offered a sensorial escape from the busy New York streets on the second floor. But many Gen-Z and younger shoppers, who have largely driven the post-Covid fragrance boom, never experienced the department store heyday.

“Department stores — the ones that still exist — are going to have to edit a little more tightly. They are going to have to have events, and they are going to have to distinguish themselves in ways that resonate with Generation Z and Xennial and millennial shoppers,” said Murphy.

Vanilla, coffee and caramel

Food-inspired fragrances, with scent profiles that feature vanilla, coffee and caramel and referred to in the industry as “gourmand” perfumes, have surged in popularity in the past three years. Launches of sugary-scented, dessert-themed fragrances increased by 24% last year alone, Mintel said.

The rise in popularity is happening alongside the increased use of GLP-1 medications for weight loss, such as Ozempic, Wegovy and Mounjaro.

Improve the sense of smell using radio waves

Posted by Robin on 22 August 2025 2 Comments

A new study introduces a safe, painless way to improve the sense of smell using radio waves. Unlike traditional treatments that rely on strong scents or medications, this noninvasive method stimulates olfactory nerves directly through a small antenna placed near the forehead.

Testing showed that a single five-minute session improved participants’ ability to detect faint odors for over a week. Researchers believe this approach could help patients with smell disorders and professionals who depend on fine scent discrimination.

Coty on Wednesday forecast a drop in current-quarter sales as weak spending in the U.S. sapped demand for beauty products...

The company's shares were down 16% in extended trading after it also posted a surprise fourth-quarter loss.

Coty will raise prices in its premium fragrances unit in the U.S. and onshore some production to cushion the impact of the 15% duties on imports from Europe...
