My own body odor was unrecognizable

Posted by Robin on 23 September 2022 Leave a Comment

Also amiss: Tap water reeked of bleach; I smelled gasoline when none was present. My own body odor was unrecognizable, like a stranger had been wearing my clothes. My senses were, simply stated, torched. My personal, fire-breathing dragon was alerting me to something insidious: My body hadn't healed properly from COVID-19.

About 30 percent of your receptor arsenal

The upshot is that you can expect about 30 percent of your receptor arsenal to function differently than your neighbor’s, which explains why conversations starting with “Do you smell that?” so frequently devolve into farce. A substance like androsterone—a musk found in human sweat, truffles and elsewhere—can smell like sandalwood or urine or nothing at all, depending on the nature of the smeller. For a long time researchers believed that “asparagus pee” wasn’t universal, because only certain people reported a malodorous bouquet after consuming the spiky veggie. In fact, only some unlucky noses can detect it, but for those who can, the odor is universal—a fact those subjects realized “only when they smelled each others’ urine,” Keller says.

Seismic shift

Posted by Robin on 21 September 2022 1 Comment

The way we choose what fragrance we wear is evolving. There was a time when the perfume you picked came down to the fashion house you idolised, the celebrity du jour or possibly even the ad campaign – who could forget the Baz Luhrmann directed Chanel advert with Nicole Kidman or Charlize Theron stepping out of liquid gold on behalf of J’Adore by Dior. However, there’s been a seismic shift in scent and while there will always be a place for traditional fragrance houses, there’s an overwhelming amount of new, niche brands popping up that bring with them unique notes, sustainable innovations and an intricate back story.

China’s fragrance market

Posted by Robin on 20 September 2022 2 Comments

Powered by these young consumers, China’s fragrance market is expected to maintain double-digit growth in the years ahead, with Mintel projecting sales to double between 2020 and 2025 from 6.9 billion yuan ($1.1 billion) to 15.4 billion yuan ($2.4 billion). Euromonitor International, meanwhile, expects fragrance sales to reach 30 billion yuan ($4.7 billion) by 2025. Growing fragrance demand and usage isn’t just benefiting the biggest names with the longest history in mainland China — among them Chanel N°5 and Dior J’Adore. In recent years, the evolution of consumer tastes has brought a greater willingness to experiment with lesser-known brands from both overseas and domestic producers.
