The equipment can produce 40 different smells

Posted by Robin on 5 October 2022 Leave a Comment

Japanese electronics giant Sony has developed a device to measure an individual's sense of smell. The company hopes it will eventually be used at hospitals as olfactory measurement could help with the early detection of dementia.

Sony says the equipment can produce 40 different smells. It instantly emits a scent when the operator selects one from a dedicated app. Test subjects also use the app to indicate what they think the smell is.

A smell walk

I am on a smell walk, a habit formed during the coronavirus pandemic: I stroll around my tree-lined neighborhood in Toronto’s east end, focusing not on the city’s more obvious sights and sounds, but on its subtler scented stimuli. I started these walks for my mental health—walking provided me with daily physical activity, and smelling enabled a much-needed sense of cognitive stillness. These days, it’s become a scavenger hunt for my curiosity, an opportunity to encounter new odors that might teach me something about the place and time I inhabit.

The chemical signals associated with stress

A new study by researchers from Queens University, Belfast, and Newcastle University in the U.K. has investigated whether dogs can in fact smell when a person experiences stress. Given the excellent sense of smell that dogs have, and the fact that they have lived in association with humans for thousands of years, the researchers wondered whether dogs are able to perceive the chemical signals associated with stress in their owners.

The promise contained in voluptuous notes of sunny daffodil and jasmine

Does reading leave a residue? Whenever I’ve accumulated a stash of glossy magazines, I like to make strips from the perfume samples embedded in their pages. These I will turn into bookmarks, which will turn me into a voracious consumer of words. That, at least, is the promise contained in voluptuous notes of sunny daffodil and jasmine, or velvety sandalwood and iris. Also, violet, which, as it turns out, is a kind of aphrodisiac: when you get a whiff, volatile molecules momentarily stun your nose and leave you craving more violets — and, in my case, words.

Craft fragrances in line with your creative vision

Silver Oud, a potent woody leather scent, was originally launched with intent for the Middle East market, but resonated so well that the brand rolled it out globally. The Renaissance collection, a “more contemporary take,” was received well in the Middle East, while bestsellers in China are Memoir and Epic, aromatic leather and woody amber creations. The key takeaway? Craft fragrances in line with your creative vision, rather than preconceived and partially outdated consumer taste references.
