A gift we must preserve and take care of

Rose. Because it was the perfume my mother wore. She applied rose water on my face every morning until I was about 10 years old. She just turned 90. I consider all of the notes coming from nature as a gift we must preserve and take care of, because they really are emotional and linked to our history. Immediately when we’re smelling something, we’re connected to our memories of childhood. The smell of fruit like peach, banana, or coconut influences our mood and makes us happier.

A character-development tool

But it has quietly become a character-development tool on sets and sound stages. Susan Sarandon, who wears a different scent for each of her movies, shared the strategy with Kirsten Dunst, who has used it too. So have Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Emma Stone, and Penélope Cruz. "It's a wonderful secret weapon," says Laura Linney, who has also used fragrance to get into a character’s headspace. "It just hits you in such a primal, deep place."

It is me and it protected me

I picked this scent when was 13. Kids were bullying me because I was frumpy and short, and they made fun of my baby face and everything. This fragrance acted as my Superman disguise; it was like my shining armour. I disguised myself as a man because it was a manly man's scent and it never failed me.

So from 13 to 61, I wore that because it’s been a part of my success. It is me and it protected me. Speaking from experience, wearing a fragrance can be uplifting. It can be a way to be someone other than who you are. I think beauty – makeup and skincare – is a way to boost your self-esteem.

Strategic value

“The deal has limited impact in the short term, but we think it gives Estée Lauder full control of one of the fastest growing brands in its portfolio and reduces the risk of losing an important franchise if Tom Ford were to go to another suitor,” wrote Andrea Teixeira, lead analyst at J.P. Morgan in her note on the subject. She added that Tom Ford is “well suited” for Estée Lauder because of the strategic value of the brand and the growth opportunities.
