We can’t keep up

Posted by Robin on 9 December 2022 2 Comments

“The demand is just so strong that we can’t keep up,” said Yves Bouquier, the president of Pochet’s US subsidiary. “We’ve never delivered more perfume or beauty bottles in our entire existence.” The company delivered 270 million glass perfume bottles and beauty jars this year. That’s a record for the 400-year-old company, which says it produced the first bottle designed by a perfumer in 1853 for Guerlain.

One person led to two

The scent was created back in 2015 in celebration of Baccarat's 250th anniversary. It was supposed to be a limited edition of 250 crystal bottles, designed by Georges Chevalier, housed in a beautiful box, available for the happy few. It was intoxicating. People would stop you on the street and ask you “what is your scent? It's the most beautiful scent that I have ever smelled.” It was very mathematical: one person led to two. It's exponential. I think what happened on social media is a reflection of what happened in real life. Francis created one of the most desirable scents in the world without any marketing spend, any campaign, any KOLs, or any celebrity embodying the scent. It's unheard of.

A lucrative move

The answer may have a large financial impact. The scent industry is booming, with the global perfume market valued at $30.6 billion in 2021 — and projected to grow to $43.2 billion in 2028, according to a report from the market research firm Fortune Business Insights. So as industry watchers refer to so-called “eco-friendly” and “clean” fragrances as an emerging niche, particularly among Gen Z and millennial consumers who are drawn to nontoxic products good for the environment, producing such scents is likely to be a lucrative move.

Insight into human response to scents

A team at the University of Lisbon was conducting research to map brain activity and brain response to certain fragrances, working to create a database of results that provided subjective and objective insight into human response to scents.

“The goal is, in effect, to build a database so when you have a fragrance or a blend, you can predict what the response of our customers will be,” said Hugo Alexandre-Ferreira PhD, associate professor at the University of Portugal.
