“We talk a lot about the climate crisis, but it’s not only the climate crisis that’s affecting us – there’s the ecological crisis. We’re in the midst of the sixth mass extinction, losing 200 species every day,” [Michal} Benmayor told attendees.

There had been unprecedented heat waves across the US, Europe and India in recent years, with wild fires causing extensive losses of fauna and flora, she said. “Fragrance sales reached new heights following the pandemic, and it’s particularly impressive that the market is maintaining this elevated level rather than softening, which is typically the case after such an unprecedented performance,” Larissa Jensen, beauty industry adviser at NPD, said in a statement.

The year was 1981, and if you couldn’t get your hands on a bottle of Giorgio, were you even there? Reportedly the first perfume to be banned from restaurants because it was so voluminous, tenacious and outrageous, what it lacked in subtlety, it more than made up for in getting its wearers noticed. And that was precisely the point.
