75%

Posted by Robin on 12 May 2023 2 Comments

Estee Lauder's (EL) stock tumbled on Wednesday as the company lowered its expectations for sales in 2023.

Adjusted earnings per share for the company's fiscal third quarter fell 75% from the same period last year while net sales lagged 12%. Slower-than-expected Asia travel recovery weighed on growth, according to Estee Lauder management.

[...] The sales declines contrast the results of others operating in Asia and the makeup industry as a whole.

Extra repulsive

What makes a person extra repulsive to a mosquito? It might be the scent of coconut.

That was one of the more curious findings of a small study published Wednesday in the journal iScience, which looked at whether different scented soaps made people more or less attractive to mosquitoes.

A new way to introduce odors into virtual reality

Posted by Robin on 10 May 2023 Leave a Comment

Scientists have come up with a new way to introduce odors into virtual reality via small, wireless interfaces.

Creating smells in virtual reality is a vexing problem that has prevented consumer VR devices from offering a full sensory experience in most settings. “People can touch in VR,” says Xinge Yu, a professor at the department of biomedical engineering at the City University of Hong Kong and the lead author of the new paper, published today in Nature Communications. “And of course, you can see and hear in VR. But how about smell and taste?”

This tastes too blue

At 25, [Kristoffer] Vural suffered a stroke that left him paralyzed for a year. [...] In addition to a loss of mobility, Vural’s stroke also resulted in a stranger, more mysterious change: His sense of taste and smell heightened. As a result, brushing his teeth became nearly unbearable. “[Toothpaste] tasted too synthetic, too chemical, too strong,” he explains.

Vural also developed synesthesia, a condition that allows him to experience taste and smell as colors. “I remember when it started, I was just like, ‘Oh, this tastes too blue, it should taste more red.’ And people were looking at me like I was crazy.”
