Serious business

Posted by Robin on 25 May 2023 2 Comments

In New Mexico, chiles are serious business.

So serious, in fact, they’re now written into the law of the land. As of March 2023, ‘roasting green chile’ is now the official scent of New Mexico. Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham signed the bill, making New Mexico the first state in the country with an official aroma. “You would be hard-pressed to find a destination more closely associated with an aroma than New Mexico and roasting green chile,” says Grisham. “Chile is tied into nearly every aspect of New Mexico life, from our culture to our economy.” The state produced a whopping 53,000 tons of the peppers in 2022.

Their intrinsic properties

Posted by Robin on 24 May 2023 6 Comments

The ‘challenge’ that the sector currently faces is that under proposed EU rules, fragrance ingredients will no longer be regulated on the basis of their dose, exposure and end use, but rather on their intrinsic properties. Such an approach, if implemented without consideration for the specific characteristics of fragrance could hammer entire olfactive families. These families make up the scents known and loved by consumers around the world, and their absence would be felt – and smelled!

It has always had an historic boldness. For example, Pour Un Homme de Caron, which is now an iconic fragrance, was a revolution in perfumery when it was created in 1934. This was the very first fragrance for men that had the audacity to meld lavender, a traditional men’s fragrance ingredient, with vanilla, more associated with feminine scents. My vision is certainly coming to life as we continue to create powerful scents with strong personalities.
