On the rise

Posted by Robin on 1 August 2023 Leave a Comment

Global sales of high-end fragrances started growing significantly during the pandemic and have been on the rise ever since, which seemed to surprise even fragrance players: “We initially thought, ‘OK, this is just pent-up demand,’ but we’ve seen it continue for approximately three years. As we’ve started to understand the consumer growth, what we’re finding is there are a lot of new consumers” shared Inter Parfum’s CFO in an interview with Business of Fashion.

Though most people didn't take to the smell, a small contingent of staffers liked it.

Maddie Berg, a senior editor on the tech and trending news desk, smiled after sniffing the paper. "I think it smells good," she said. "It smells like someone who'd been at a campfire and working the farm or something. Like a burly country man."

The carbon footprint

What is the impact of these measures? Armani claims that refilling reduces the use of glass by 38%, metal by 67% and plastic by 20%, and that buying a 50ml spray bottle and a 150ml bottle to refill reduces the carbon footprint of that fragrance by 64%. As this is company data, it is difficult to verify, although it would seem logical to think that refilling a bottle of perfume once should halve the carbon footprint of the packaging. However, this trend is still in the minority: according to Premium Beauty News, data from market consultancy NPD indicates that refillable fragrances account for only 6% of sales in Europe, and refills for 1%, although there was a 31% increase in 2022 compared to the previous year.

The last generation to know the intimacy of lead pencil on paper

Posted by Robin on 27 July 2023 6 Comments

We are, perhaps, the last generation to know the intimacy of lead pencil on paper. If you closed your eyes now, could you not recall it? The sound of dozens of scribbling tips pressed into pads of paper, before you got older and pencils were swapped out for pens laden with inks of red and blue. No doubt if you tried, you’d smell that distinct wood and metallic scent of pencil shavings wafting to your nose, just as you did when you were a child, those many years ago.
