It was … perfume

Posted by Robin on 11 March 2024 Leave a Comment

The world’s biggest cryptocurrency exchange, Binance, went viral this week for posting about a new product in its offering. It wasn’t a token. It wasn’t a structured product. It wasn’t equity. It was … perfume.

“Crypto by Binance” has a ring to it, but not in the fragrance market. To be fair, the new scent—billed as "Affordable Affluence" and sold at pop-up stores in Bahrain, is to promote an "Academy” or a learning course and associated credit for women who want to learn more about cryptocurrencies.

Say what you want about “Eau de Binance,” but it beats the crypto industry’s contribution to International Women’s Day in 2022, when Bain Capital Crypto announced its new investment team by enthusiastically posting a collage of seven men. But even as more women enter the industry, the crypto sphere has struggled to shake the stench of a men’s locker room.

White florals can very easily slip into dated territory

Stinking of bourbon whiskey and Gauloises cigarettes

When Helena Bonham Carter walked onto the set of 2012’s Dark Shadows movie, she was stinking of bourbon whiskey and Gauloises cigarettes.

Her character was a chain-smoking alcoholic psychiatrist, but Bonham Carter hadn’t gone “method”; she had simply spritzed herself with a bespoke fragrance created specifically for her by fragrance designer Azzi Glasser.

The realm of fruit-forward compositions

On the heels of last year’s cherry perfume craze — propelled in part by Tom Ford’s viral Lost Cherry fragrance and its woodier counterpart, Cherry Smoke — brands are delving deeper into the realm of fruit-forward compositions.

While Spate forecasts cherry fragrances will remain a distinct frontrunner through 2024, it has also tracked year-over-year search growth of 60.4 percent for peach perfumes; 39.2 percent for citrus fragrances, and slightly lesser — but still significant — growth for mango and coconut perfumes.

Imagine if we could inhale scents that delay the onset of cancer

Posted by Robin on 4 March 2024 3 Comments

Imagine if we could inhale scents that delay the onset of cancer, inflammation, or neurodegenerative disease. Researchers at the University of California, Riverside, are poised to bring this futuristic technology closer to reality.

In lab experiments, a team led by Anandasankar Ray, a professor of molecular, cell and systems biology, exposed the fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster) to diacetyl, a microbial volatile compound released by yeast, and found changes in gene expression in the fly’s antennae in just a few days. In separate experiments, the team found similar gene expression changes in mice and human cells.
