Look for banana

Posted by Robin on 23 April 2024 Leave a Comment

Unexpected fruits feature (and play up our want of milky finishes), while tried-and-trues get a twist. To begin, look for banana. “It’s the fruit that pairs the best with jasmine notes—it brings fun, creaminess, and a touch of green vibrancy,” says [Arnaud Guggenbuhl of Givaudan], referencing Marc Jacobs’s new Daisy Wild Eau de Parfum. “The other ‘It fruit’ is mango, thanks to its pulpiness and lactonic facet, it brings a comforting escapism feeling.” Citrus notes will come candied or expressed through ginger, and fresh scents come treated with bitter rhubarb or fruity lychee accents.

Pheromones produced by ants

Posted by Robin on 22 April 2024 7 Comments

A new scientific study suggests that some species of ticks—those Lyme Disease-spreading creepy crawlies—are scared off by pheromones produced by ants. Now, a team of researchers is working to synthetically replicate these ant excretions and sell them as tick repellent. Because unlike DEET or Citronella or other popular tick spray, the one derived from ant juice is virtually undetectable by the human nose.

A discreet lounge

A new feature of the shop is a discreet lounge where customers are invited to personalise their candles by choosing from around thirty imposing jars and eight candle scents. "The candle is then made in our workshops in France, and you have to wait about six weeks to receive it," explains Emanuela Bauriaud, pointing out that the prices of her "semi-measure" candles start from 500 euros.

[...] Another new feature of Maison Diptyque is a room dedicated entirely to workshops. The programme includes flower arranging, painting, potting, etc.

The foundations of the artisanal perfumery movement

Posted by Robin on 19 April 2024 8 Comments

Twenty-five years ago, I started working on Editions de Parfums in an attempt to create a direct link between the best perfumers in the industry and the most demanding public,” he continued. “In doing so, I created a platform where noses could express themselves fully and be so proud of their work that they would want to sign it with their names. I could not have foreseen that what became the first publishing house for ‘noses’ would reveal these artists to the world in such a powerful way, show the public that perfume can be an art form and lay the foundations of the artisanal perfumery movement.

— Frédéric Malle announced yesterday that he will step down from Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle (the brand was acquired by Estee Lauder in 2015). Read more in EXCLUSIVE: Frédéric Malle Is Leaving His Eponymous Fragrance Brand at Women's Wear Daily via Yahoo Life.

Very ill-tempered

Posted by Robin on 18 April 2024 2 Comments

A few years ago, retired police officer Sam Bryce posted a question on the U.K. Facebook group “Ladies Who Lamb.” A ram she owned had become very ill-tempered and was picking on his castrated fieldmate. Was there anything the other shepherdesses could suggest to calm him?

The replies came back within minutes: Lynx Africa.
