It felt like a miracle

My father was a perfumer too, and I vividly remember one time, when he was about 80, walking him back to his garden at 1am. We both stopped in our tracks. There was this incredible scent of tuberose coming from the town, and jasmine from somewhere up high. The meeting of the two was like a fully formed perfume. He said he’d been experiencing that for 65 years, but every time it felt like a miracle.

Insects such as fruit flies, on the other hand, have a mere 100,000 neurons to work with. Yet their survival is dependent upon their ability to decipher the meaning of complex odor mixtures around them to locate food, seek potential mates and avoid predators. Scientists have pondered how insects are able to smell, or extract information from odors, with a much smaller olfactory sensory system compared with mammals.

As Madrid begins an ambitious renovation of hundreds of streets, the potent smell of newly laid asphalt is overwhelming some areas.

Authorities have come up with what they thought was a winning idea to tackle the issue - make the road surface mango-scented.

While the fruity fragrance is effective in disguising the odour of fresh tarmac, residents are both baffled and unimpressed.
