The Emperor of Scent: A Story of Perfume, Obsession, and the Last Mystery of the Senses, by Chandler Burr

Posted by Marcello on 1 November 2005 15 Comments

Chandler Burr's The Emperor of ScentWith the exception of a handful of bestselling novels, books about fragrance rarely appeal to audiences outside the perfume community, and seldom raise controversy among their readers. The opposite is true for Chandler Burr’s The Emperor of Scent, which caused both a stampede and a stir as it hit the bookstores in 2003.

The Emperor of Scent tells the true story of Luca Turin, lecturer in biophysics (1993-2000) at University College London. Turin has developed a new theory of smell, which he attempts to bring under the attention of the academic community. His ideas on how smell works are radically different from those of the ‘established’ researchers in the field, and go against all principles by which manufacturers produce synthetic odorants. As Turin submits his paper to the renowned magazine Nature, his hopes for glory are clouded by a mist of opposition: the road to recognition proves to be long and arduous.

The resistence to Turin’s theory is the main theme in the second half of the book…

Perfume book report: Perfume, by William I Kaufman

Posted by Robin on 27 October 2005 4 Comments

Perfume, by William Kaufman, is yet another coffee-table type survey of the world of perfume. It offers a more detailed history of perfume than some of the other books reviewed here, starting with the use of aromatic materials in ancient Egypt, moving on to an overview of perfume flacons through the ages, and then tracing the origins of the modern perfume industry in France via the production of perfumed gloves in Grasse…

Is there a single book that covers all these things exhaustively? The answer is no. But The Book of Perfume by Elisabeth Barillé and Catherine Laroze comes very close…

Posted by Robin on 20 September 2005 6 Comments

Edwin Morris Scents of TimeScents of Time, subtitled Perfume From Ancient Egypt to the 21st Century, is a gift set that was published by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1999. An outer box sleeve opens to reveal the book along with eight perfume minatures developed by Givaudan to illustrate the “most influential scents in history”: frankincense, rose, sandalwood jasmine, orange blossom, spice, eau de cologne, millefleurs, and sportif.

The text provides a nicely illustrated survey of perfume history. A short introductory chapter introduces the major scent families, along with some basic production techniques and perfume terminology…

Book report: Perfume: The Art and Science of Scent, by Cathy Newman

Posted by Robin on 6 September 2005 18 Comments

Cathy Newman PerfumeCathy Newman’s Perfume is a coffee table book, complete with lots of glossy photographs by Robb Kendrick. It is also a wonderful introduction to the world of fragrance development and marketing. Up until a few years ago, I never gave a minute’s thought to how perfumes were created. I probably suspected that Calvin Klein didn’t throw on a lab coat and mix up the formula for Eternity himself, but if you had told me that “noses” at a few companies produced the majority of the world’s fragrances, I would have been quite surprised.

In Perfume, Newman takes us behind the scenes as she undertakes the process of commissioning a new perfume. She starts by creating a brief, or description of what kind of scent she wants, then issues it to several perfumers at Firmenich…
