Perfume books ~ The Perfume Companion: A Connoisseur's Guide by Nigel Groom

Posted by Marcello on 12 August 2006 Leave a Comment

The Perfume Companion by Nigel GroomThe smallest coffee-table book in my collection is Nigel Groom's Perfume Companion. It has the shape and size of a travel guide, which makes it a handy companion indeed: you can bring it along to the dentist, the hair salon, the nail studio, or the gym. But let's assume you have no intention to do that. What other advantages does a compact guide like The Perfume Companion have over ordinary coffee-table books? To answer that question, let's see what this “Connoisseur's Guide” has to offer.

The Perfume Companion consists of two parts. Part one is essentially a quick guide to perfumery, featuring a brief historical overview of the industry…

Perfume in the news: Marie Antoinette, unconventional fragrances & more

Posted by Robin on 7 August 2006 4 Comments

Elisabeth de Feydeau's biography of Marie Antoinette's perfumer, A Scented Palace, inspired Hannah Betts of the UK Times Online to pay a visit to Versailles:

…And, most evocatively, a powder-blue cabinet room, festooned with peacocks (an emblem of motherhood), with chair handles carved in the image of her favourite dog. This was the queen’s refuge, her powder room, in effect, and one still holds one’s breath in anticipation of its rouged, fragrant occupant. It was here that Marie Antoinette sought solace from stifling palace etiquette. As with today’s celebrities, chief among her confidants were her fellow image-makers: her couturière, Rose Bertin, her hairdresser, Léonard, and her perfumer, Jean-Louis Fargeon.

Building a fragrance library: five suggestions for advanced readers

Posted by Marcello on 19 July 2006 9 Comments

couple-reading

I often wondered if people on perfume boards had anything else in common beside their love of fragrances. After years of collecting data, comparing statistics, and plotting ingenious 3-D graphs, I finally found the answer: perfume addicts are avid readers. Whether it’s fiction or non-fiction, true perfume lovers seem to read day and night. I know many of them pay frequent visits to NST as well, which is why I decided to revive the old “Building a fragrance library”-concept. Last December we made a list of five “must-have” books for beginners, ranging from Süskind’s Perfume to Burr’s The Emperor of Scent. This time, the focus is on reference books.

Let’s start with a title closely related to the subject of perfumery: The Chemistry of Fragrances, compiled by David Pybus and Charles Sell. I have to admit I don’t own this one (yet), but I was fortunate enough to browse through it very recently. It covers all aspects involved in perfumery, giving wonderful insights into the stuff that modern fragrances are made of, and how they are marketed. As has been said many times before, chemistry plays an essential role in the art of perfumery; this book makes it clear that science and creativity go hand in hand…

Perfume books ~ Smell: The Secret Seducer

Posted by Marcello on 29 June 2006 Leave a Comment

Smell: The Secret Seducer by Piet VroonThere's only a handful of comprehensive books on the psychology of smell; one of them is Smell: The Secret Seducer by Piet Vroon. It was originally published in Dutch in 1994, and the English translation is now almost ten years old. I included it in my list of five “must-have” books for beginners (December 2005), because it's properly researched, well-referenced, and easily accessible to a large public. It was a long time since I last browsed through it, so I dusted off my old copy of the Dutch original, hoping that I wouldn't be disappointed in retrospect. Here's what I found…

New website for Suskind’s Perfume Movie

Posted by Robin on 16 June 2006 7 Comments

Perfume movieThe movie version of Perfume: The Story of a Murderer now has its own website, complete with a picture gallery, links to the trailer, and a synopsis of the story. Per Horror Channel, where I found the link, the movie is to debut on December 8.

Will we get a tie-in perfume, as we did with Memoirs of a Geisha?
