The daily lemming

Trudon's "Lost in a moment" limited edition duo for summer, with candles in Under the Trees ("An invigorating green juice Under the Trees unfolds as a refreshing, aromatic-green juice, complemented with bright notes of cedar wood. Its invigorating fragrance is composed of a cucumber accord with a hint of blackcurrant buds in the head notes, a lively spearmint and jasmine heart, fused with notes of cedar in the base") and Summer Haze ("A sweet-floral composition Summer Haze features a sweet and floral scent that exudes pure joy. Sophisticated and daring, the fragrance consists of a red berry macaroon accord in the head notes, an opulent heart of absolute rose and a musky base with warm notes of Tonka bean"). Both fragrances by perfumer Alexandra Carlin, 270g for $140 each at Trudon.

Very much not my lemming, but presumably it is somebody's: the limited edition Infra Luna 2.0* from Byredo. "[...] Taking inspiration from the insect world and transposing it into bold industrial design, experience, form and function intersect with the INFRA LUNA 2.0 desk lamp, the second collaboration between Ben Gorham and [light artist] Benoit Lalloz. [...] In a hybrid project combining scent and sculptural light design, the surprise is visual but also olfactory. Playing with temperature to release the scent of the candle placed underneath - the heat from the lamp’s halogen bulb melts the candle wax - has a spirit that is part lab, part installation. Creating a gentle halo of light and an additional halo of scent, the INFRA LUNA 2.0 is as inventive as it is intriguing." €2500, includes bulb but not candle, available in pink or silver. [*There was apparently a 1.0 version of this lamp back in 2022; I missed it.]

Adding to the I-just-want-the-jar pile, the Maison La Bougie Rose Rouge candle: "Imagine the smoky embrace of incense lingering in the air, the deep warmth of cedarwood underfoot, and the velvety richness of a crimson rose blooming in the background. Notes of tonka bean, vanilla, and patchouli add a sensual depth, like a whispered secret in a grand Haussmannian apartment." 2kg with lid, AED1,600 at Bloomingdales in the Middle East, or on markdown for $125 at Saks Off 5th.

Trudon Versailles candle ~ home fragrance review

Posted by Kevin on 14 March 2025 21 Comments

After decades of scented candle experimentation — low, medium and high (we’re talking price points) — I’ve come to realize the aromas inside a jar don’t always match the price tags. Many expensive candles smell cheap or ordinary and some inexpensively priced candles smell heavenly and high end. (And smelling cold wax in a boutique display candle won’t tell you how it will smell once lit.) Buying candles gobbles up money and you can end up feeling blessed or cursed when the moment of truth arrives and match flame hits wick.

Over the years, trial and error has led me back to two candle-making fragrance houses — Astier de Villatte and Trudon. I realized this recently when looking at a gorilla rack in my basement that holds my vases all the candle jars I’ve saved to repurpose…
