Starting next Monday (6/12), Now Smell This will no longer send email announcements of new articles. Apologies to those of you who liked this service, but it has drawbacks on my end, and in fact, I have just now realized that I inadvertently turned off the notifications a few days ago when testing. Home fragrance: Antica Farmacista Vaniglia, Mandarino e Bourbon (Vanilla, Mandarin & Bourbon) Room and Linen Spray

Posted by Kevin on 3 June 2006 5 Comments

Antica Farmacista Vaniglia, Mandarino e Bourbon home fragranceRecently, I’ve come across many articles online and in magazines informing me that the scents men fancy most are (in no particular order): vanilla, cinnamon, licorice and pie (apple and pumpkin being favorites). Though I will happily eat a cinnamon roll, a slice of apple pie and/or a scoop (or two) of vanilla ice cream, I avoid sweet-foody room fragrance products that smell of cake icing, lemon sorbet, or crème brûlée. (The gist — dessert on a plate: GOOD; ‘dessert’ in a bottle or candle: BAD.) Terre d’Oc Incense ~ home fragrance report

Posted by Kevin on 20 May 2006 9 Comments

The 'art of incense' combines the ceremonial with the sensual, contemplation with languor.

Terre D'Oc, based in Provence, produces incense sticks and cones in subtle floral, spice and wood aromas…

Nile Lily candle by Pacifica ~ home fragrance report

Posted by Kevin on 6 May 2006 11 Comments

Pacifica Nile Lily candlePacifica was founded in Portland, Oregon in 1995. I became acquainted with the company through their glycerin soaps (there are always bars of Pacifica Tunisian Jasmine and Sandalwood in my bathroom). A single bar of Pacifica soap easily perfumes a large room.

The scents of Pacifica’s candles are also robust. The hand-poured candles are made in small batches in two formulations: food-grade paraffin or vegetable-based soy wax. Both versions have lead-free cotton wicks. Nile Lily (made with dark red wax) contains notes of white flowers, saffron, lotus and lily. My first reaction to Nile Lily (unlit) was: “gardenia.” The gardenia note hovers in the air during the burn and is joined by what smells like faint tuberose. Gradually, the lily and lotus emerge, with a hint of “background” saffron. As I burned this candle through the winter months it brought to mind warm, humid days and a lush flower-filled water garden…no small feat…
