Diptyque Oud candle

I burn scented candles in summer. Beautiful aromas make me feel “cooler” / calmer if the air is hot, and if the AC is on, scented candles freshen the air. I used to think light floral or citrus-heavy candle scents were best for sultry days, but now I tend towards “tropical wood” scents in summer (and reserve my floral and lemon/mandarin/grapefruit candles for winter). Today I’m reviewing two candles with “exotic” aromas: one presents oud and conjures a Southeast Asia temple, the other showcases sandalwood and makes me want to travel — to Karnataka or Australia…

Tempting but spendy counter sprays from Illume, in Rosewater Sage ("Aromatic eucalyptus mingles with silver sage, sparkling rosewater and warm amber") and Petitgrain Basil ("Torn garden basil leaves surround peppery petitgrain, zesty lemon blossoms and deep vetiver"), $12 each. Bougies la Francaise School Paper Glue

You'd have to be of a certain age to remember pots of white glue, as opposed to twist up glue sticks, I think? If you're as ancient as I am, this might sound appealing — the School Paper Glue candle from Bougies la Francaise, complete with galvanized tin lid: "Reinterpreting the little pot of white glue of your childhood, this vintage candle will take you back to the benches of the school. [...] This intriguing candle brings you top notes of Almond & Peach, middle notes of Rose, Heliotrope & Violet and bottom notes of Rosemary & Thyme." $20 at Hampton Court. Now we need a candle duplicating the smell of the mimeograph, which I think I read somewhere was actually toxic.
