Lush Death & Decay ~ perfume review

Posted by Robin on 20 March 2015 23 Comments

Funeral sheath

There are some oddball niche lines out there, but it’s hard to imagine any other mainstream brand the size of Lush — much less a mall chain the size of Lush (over 900 stores) — launching a fragrance collection under the name Death, Decay and Renewal. The individual fragrance descriptions emphasize the renewal part as much as the death and decay part (the collection is “inspired by the cyclical nature of life”, and do watch out for that ear worm), but still, it would be a surprise from anybody else.

Even then, I didn’t necessarily expect Death & Decay, one of the nine scents in the series,1 to smell quite so much like, well, death and decay…

Sonoma Scent Studio Yin and Ylang ~ fragrance review

Posted by Jessica on 4 April 2014 21 Comments

Cananga odorata, ylang ylang

This month, independent perfumery Sonoma Scent Studio releases a new fragrance named Yin and Ylang, whose concept and inspiration were provided by Michelyn Camen of CaFleureBon. Yin and Ylang features “beautiful floral notes that meld into a woodsy drydown”: bergamot, blood orange, soft aldehydes, beeswax absolute, ylang complete oil, jasmine sambac absolute, tuberose absolute, rose damascones, ginger CO2, Mysore sandalwood oil, oakmoss absolute, amber, patchouli, vanilla and musk.

I was intrigued by Yin and Ylang’s description and notes when they were first announced, because I happen to love ylang ylang and I’ve enjoyed many of Sonoma Scent Studio perfumer Laurie Erickson’s previous floral fragrances…

Aftelier Organic Ylang Face Elixir ~ scented body product review

Posted by Jessica on 8 November 2013 15 Comments

Aftelier Organic Ylang Face Elixir

The weather has suddenly turned cool and windy here in the northeast, so it’s the perfect time for me to upgrade my skincare for extra moisture and protection — and if I can work a good-smelling product or two into my regimen, then all the better! Natural perfumer Mandy Aftel of Aftelier has just released a new Organic Ylang Face Elixir, which I’ve been sampling this week. It contains organic ylang ylang, a creamy floral blended with bright pink grapefruit and blood orange, both known for their toning and softening properties, in a base of seven organic oils (rice bran, sweet almond, apricot kernel, camellia, grapeseed, squalene and rose hip seed).

When I first became seriously interested in fragrance, and I was smelling as many perfumes as I could in order to define what I liked, I realized that ylang ylang was (and is) one of my favorite floral notes…

Diptyque Eau Moheli ~ fragrance review

Posted by Robin on 11 June 2013 30 Comments

Diptyque Eau Moheli banner

Eau Moheli is this summer’s entry from French niche line Diptyque; it joins Eau Rose in their Les Florales collection. The name comes from Mohéli, one of the three Comores islands, and it’s “about” ylang ylang, or as Diptyque puts it, Eau Moheli “approaches the scent of this exotic flower from another point of view, capturing the journey from its remote island home in the Indian Ocean”.

If you’ve kept up with Diptyque’s recent releases, from 2005’s Do Son on through to last year’s Volutes,1 you were presumably already prepared not to expect anything heady, much less a traditional exotic floral, and in that sense, Moheli delivers: after a brief punch of ylang ylang and citrus and fruit and peppery ginger in the opening, it calms into something closer to the house’s modern sheer style, and into something that you might not immediately think of as primarily a ylang ylang perfume at all…

Parfums M Micallef Ylang in Gold ~ fragrance review

Posted by Angela on 10 December 2012 32 Comments

Parfums M Micallef Ylang in Gold, bottle detail

Last week I interviewed Josh Meyer of Imaginary Authors for a local magazine. I brought some perfume samples, including Parfums M Micallef Ylang in Gold, and when Meyer smelled it, he said, “It’s so smooth. That’s their style.”

At home, I dabbed some on, and I couldn’t agree more. Ylang in Gold is as smooth as silk charmeuse. It’s whipped into a soft, creamy blend that reminds me of custard. Like custard, Ylang in Gold transforms and unites its materials into a mellifluous whole. Also like custard, Ylang in Gold is sweet. Really sweet.

Ylang in Gold, a floral oriental, was created by house perfumer Jean-Claude Astier…
