Commodity Book ~ fragrance review

Posted by Jessica on 8 June 2017 27 Comments

books

My most cherished scent memories as a child were in the library experiencing real books which created a world of wonder and exploration. Living now in a technological world filled with iPads, Commodity Book takes you into the New York Public Library to recapture the experience of yesterday; turning the pages and breathing in the smell of dry paper mingling in with the open fresh air.

That’s a quote from Ketrin Leka, the perfumer who developed the fragrance Book for niche brand Commodity. How could I resist, right? I love reading more than almost anything else, and I do as much of my reading as possible from actual books, and the Main Reading Room at the New York Public Library’s 42nd Street branch is one of my favorite places in the world.

Given my paired bibliophilia and aromaphilia, you’d think I’d fall hard for Book. Did I? Not really…

Gucci Guilty Absolute Pour Homme ~ fragrance review

Posted by Kevin on 24 May 2017 39 Comments

Gucci Guilty Absolute Pour Homme

There’s been lots of Internet chatter about Gucci Guilty Absolute Pour Homme1 (henceforth referred to as “Guilty Absolute”). Fragrance commenters on Basenotes are divided about Guilty Absolute’s aromas: “unexpected” (speedracer), “headache-inducing…engine oil” (Zgb), “an old pick-up my father owned” (odioustoilet) and “the smell of band-aids” (The_Cologneist).

Online reviews at Nordstrom couldn’t be more different in tone…

Loewe 001 Woman ~ fragrance review

Loewe 001 brand image

What’s with all the his-and-hers fragrance duos this fall? Kevin and I have already teamed up on a few. This week, we’re tackling 001 Man and 001 Woman from Spanish luxury brand Loewe: “Two unique fragrances, Man and Woman, created at the same time. Two accomplice fragrances, non-existent one without the other, in constant conversation … Perfectly complementary, when they are combined together, the two fragrances create a third scent.”

Although I do think of Kevin and myself as “accomplices,” we won’t be able to “combine” our fragrances for these joint reviews, since we live on opposite ends of the country…

Imaginary Authors Memoirs of a Trespasser ~ fragrance review

Imaginary Authors Memoirs of a Trespasser

The early exploration writing of Philip Sava bent the limits of post-modern fiction, revealing fantastical worlds that fooled many into believing they were, in fact, real. Sava’s kaleidoscopic collections, of which Memoirs of a Trespasser is the undeniable centerpiece, drew upon true experiences from his exotic travels but were infused with a hallucinatory inventiveness that set his work apart from others in the genre.

Though Sava had associates all over the world, he spent most of his time living in solitude on a ranch in southern Madagascar. When interrogated by the press on his cloistered lifestyle he notoriously answered, “Who needs love when you have cognac?”

When I reviewed two fragrances (An Air of Despair and A City On Fire) from indie niche line Imaginary Authors back in June, I asked people to name their own favorites from the brand in the comments. Memoirs of a Trespasser garnered the most mentions, and now that I’ve smelled it, I can see why…

Liquides Imaginaires Saltus ~ fragrance review

Liquides Imaginaires Saltus

Who’s having trouble keeping up with new niche perfume lines? I definitely am. I’m even starting to get a little resentful about it. Enough already. It seems like every designer who fancies himself a tastemaker tosses together a branding campaign and a line of “edgy” perfumes.

I see two big problems with this. First, good design sense does not mean an experienced nose. Next, a lot of these lines are treading the same ground. They either latch onto an era or cultural mileu (the 1920s, writers, historic figures), or they shoot for the now banal take on naughty, artistic, and hip. We get a lot of sizzle for a gristly burger at a ludicrous price tag.

So, you’ll understand why I didn’t jump on sampling Liquides Imaginaires fragrances…
