Bruno Fazzolari Au Dela Narcisse des Montagnes ~ fragrance review

Posted by Kevin on 17 December 2014 7 Comments

narcissus
When I read perfume descriptions these days my eyes (usually) begin to tire and a nap seems a better use of my time; rarely do descriptions of perfumes come close to what’s in the bottles. But the mention of certain notes shakes me awake and rouses my interest: notes like rosewood, hay, camphor, myrrh…and narcissus, perhaps my favorite scent of springtime.

Au Delà Narcisse des Montagnes (containing narcissus absolute)1 was created by indie perfumer (and artist) Bruno Fazzolari.2 The fragrance starts with a punch of furry and vibrant oak moss.

Niche x 3: Eau d’Italie Graine de Joie, Memo Kedu, Van Cleef & Arpels California Reverie

Posted by Robin on 28 August 2014 14 Comments

Quick reviews of three recent niche releases: Eau d’Italie Graine de Joie, Memo Kedu and Van Cleef & Arpels California Reverie. Do comment if you’ve tried any new or interesting niche fragrances lately!

Eau d’Italie Graine de Joie

Eau d'Italie Graine de Joie

Is anyone here a massive fan of Eau d’Italie? I admit I’ve mostly lost interest; nothing they’ve done since Baume du Doge in 2008 has really impressed me, and the shampoo-ish packaging is a turn-off. Graine de Joie, intended to celebrate love, is a sweet ‘n tart fruity floral…

Hiram Green Moon Bloom ~ perfume review

Posted by Robin on 27 May 2014 52 Comments

Hiram Green Moon Bloom, 50 ml bottle

Moon Bloom launched in 2013, as the debut fragrance from Hiram Green, formerly of the now-defunct niche house Scent Systems. Like the perfumes from that brand, Moon Bloom features all natural materials.

Moon Bloom is exactly what its official description says it is: “a lush and elegant tuberose”. Like its (synthetic) compatriot Frédéric Malle Carnal Flower, Moon Bloom plays up tuberose’s exotic aspect with coconut, jasmine, ylang ylang and plenty of greenery…

Byredo Flowerhead ~ perfume review & quick poll

Posted by Robin on 1 April 2014 74 Comments

Byredo Flowerhead ad visual

..this project was sparked six years ago when I gave away my cousin at her Indian wedding, which was my first traditional Indian wedding. This fragrance was about capturing the idea of an Indian bride, rather than just the wedding and I called it Flowerhead, because it was really the fictional memory that I can imagine from my own Indian wedding. The idea of marrying someone you don’t know was very interesting. There’s anxiety and excitement, and I described this person as a ‘flowerhead’, because the bride is completely covered in floral hair arrangements. — Ben Gorham of Byredo1

Flowerhead is the latest from niche line Byredo, not a brand known, I don’t think, for their florals, although they’ve done a few, including La Tulipe and the newer Inflorescence. Flowerhead got my attention in particular because it’s centered on rose, jasmine and tuberose, three floral notes I adore. Plus, the Flowerhead visuals are lovely, and the idea of a fragrance inspired by flower garlands at an Indian wedding, what’s not to like? So I tried not to be dissuaded by Gorham’s statement that it was “done in a modern way” in contrast to most floral fragrances which are “old-fashioned and not modern and smell like grandma”2 — not exactly words to warm a perfumista’s heart.3

Fear not, Flowerhead is modern, but it’s not too modern…

Dolce by Dolce & Gabbana ~ perfume review & quick poll

Posted by Robin on 27 February 2014 111 Comments

Kate King for Dolce by Dolce & Gabbana

Dolce is the latest from Dolce & Gabbana, and right away it settles itself into a distinct niche in the brand’s perfume lineup. Instead of the witty, world-weary exchanges between Scarlett Johansson and Matthew McConaughey for The One or the steamy, Sophia Loren-ish Laetitia Casta pairing with Noah Mills for Pour Femme and Pour Homme or the watery, ooh la la encounter between David Gandy and Bianca Balti for Light Blue, we have model Kate King, all done up in virginal white, demurely accepting a sprig of orange blossom from a worker in the orange orchard.

Yes, we’re in romance territory here, from the bottle cap, meant to look like a marzipan flower from a Sicilian confectioner, to the juice, a white floral blend centered on South African white amaryllis, captured via headspace technology and reportedly used here for the first time.

I liked Dolce right away…
