Mona di Orio Violette Fumee ~ fragrance review

Posted by Angela on 28 October 2013 31 Comments

Mona di Orio Violette FuméeMona di Orio Violette Fumée

It’s easy to mistakenly pigeonhole violet. When I think of violet, my thoughts first go to retro rose-violet concoctions like Frédéric Malle Lipstick Rose or violet as sweet as the candied flowers on Viennese pastries. Really, though, violet can be dark and moody, especially when paired with its leaves (think of the knowing earthiness of Jean Patou 1000) or even elegantly futuristic (like Comme des Garçons + Stephen Jones‘s waft of a flying saucer crashed into a bed of violets).

Then, of course, there’s the classic gentleman’s violet as found in British shaving creams and old-fashioned colognes. Mona di Orio Violette Fumée Eau de Parfum Intense is a gentleman’s violet, but for the modern gentleman (or lady) whose desk is topped not by fountain pens but a MacBook Pro, and whose evening tipple is more likely to be small batch bourbon from Brooklyn than a Scotch whisky and soda…

Atelier Cologne Sous le toit de Paris ~ fragrance review

Posted by Jessica on 5 July 2013 28 Comments

Atelier Cologne Sous le toit de Paris brand visual

Last year Atelier Cologne released Sous le toit de Paris in honor of the centennial of the dome at the Galeries Lafayette, one of Paris’s most elegant department store buildings. The dome (la coupole), designed by architect Ferdinand Chanut and glass artist Jacques Gruber, is the unofficial symbol of the Galeries Lafayette as well as a beautifully preserved example of Art Nouveau design. It’s fantastic in every sense of the word. As Atelier’s homage to the dome reads, “A century of elegance and extravagance! La Coupole has covered times and fashions, while inside the emotion has remained the same. The wish to reinvent oneself. The pleasure of looking and discovering. The joy of possessing the object of desire…”

Sous le toit de Paris (“under the roof of Paris”) is a special edition fragrance, available only at Atelier Cologne boutiques and the Galeries Lafayette. Its composition includes top notes of Moroccan neroli, Sicilian bergamot and African bigarade; heart notes of French violet leaves, South African geranium and Haitian vetiver; and base notes of Brazilian tonka bean, musk and white leather. Like most of Atelier’s fragrances, it’s complex yet not overwhelming, and it could be worn by either women or men. Now that I’ve finally tried it, it’s one of my favorites from the brand…

Annick Goutal La Violette ~ fragrance review

Posted by Jessica on 27 April 2012 29 Comments

viola odorataAnnick Goutal La Violette

While Robin has been trying and reviewing Nuit Etoilée, the newest fragrance release from Annick Goutal, I’ve been revisiting Goutal’s La Violette this week. La Violette was developed by perfumer Isabelle Doyen and was originally released in 2001. It has come and gone from the Goutal catalogue over the past few years, but it was recently re-released as part of the company’s quartet of soliflore fragrances, alongside Le Mimosa, Le Muguet and Rose Splendide.

La Violette really does concentrate on the idea of the violet flower; even more, it suggests the crystallized sweetness of candied violets. Its opening is a pure violet note with an aldehydic clarity. The violet soon develops a sugary veil that lasts through the fragrance’s development, although there’s also a light green note and just a breath of spice in the heart to balance out the confectionery effect. La Violette never feels chilly or sharp; overall, it’s a friendly, almost flirty violet…

Tom Ford Violet Blonde ~ perfume review

Posted by Robin on 22 September 2011 60 Comments

Tom Ford Violet Blonde advert with Lara Stone

Violet Blonde is the latest addition to Tom Ford’s Signature Collection (i.e., it’s not in his more expensive and harder-to-find Private Blend series). It’s his third pillar for women, after Black Orchid and White Patchouli, and it’s in the same ribbed bottle with metal label. This time, the bottle is in clear instead of opaque glass — and just as well, thank you; if they’d done it up in opaque violet glass I’d have had to buy it even if it was a scrubber.

It’s not a scrubber though. Violet Blonde is soft and cushy-powdery, as is the current fashion, but it’s loudly so, in keeping with Tom Ford’s aesthetic.1 I preferred it applied lightly; your mileage, of course, may vary. The opening is a heady mix of citrus, sweet fruit, violet leaf and violet (violet fans take note: it does smell like violet in the early stages). It’s green early on, and peppery throughout. The fruit notes soften as the top notes dissipate, and the violet fades into a jasmine-heavy floral mixed with a dry, peppery iris. The jasmine is clean, with fruity undertones, and it’s strong rather than rich…

CB I Hate Perfume M4 A Room with a View ~ fragrance review

Posted by Jessica on 28 May 2011 43 Comments

Room with a View posterCB I Hate Perfume Room with a view

E. M. Forster’s A Room with a View (1908) is one of my favorite novels, and its Merchant-Ivory film adaptation (1985) is one of my favorite movies. I’m also a longtime admirer of CB I Hate Perfume, so it’s strange that I only recently realized that this niche perfumery offers a scent inspired by a scene from the novel. Christopher Brosius created M4, or A Room with a View, for CB I Hate Perfume’s Metamorphosis Series and designed it to evoke “the moment when one simple beautiful gesture can transform an entire life”…
