Bond no. 9 Brooklyn, Ormonde Jayne Zizan ~ brief fragrance reviews

Posted by Robin on 18 February 2009 83 Comments

Bond no. 9 Brooklyn fragrance

Brooklyn, which launches next month, will be Bond no. 9’s 33rd fragrance. As is the case with many of the brand’s recent offerings, the packaging is half the fun; some people objected to the graffiti-covered bottle as a representation of Brooklyn, but I’m in love. Really, Bond ought to start letting their customers choose the bottle they’d like with their favorite fragrance, don’t you think? And as long as we’re dreaming, have all the empty bottles available in, say, 15 ml?

Brooklyn is a unisex fragrance from perfumer Laurent LeGuernec…

Kenzo Air ~ fragrance review

Posted by Robin on 21 January 2009 39 Comments

When I reviewed Mark Buxton's Wood & Absinth last week, several people mentioned another vetiver + anise fragrance, Kenzo Air (or Kenzoair, as I believe the brand prefers). How I made it all this time without smelling Kenzo Air is a bit of a mystery to me, but I suppose the name “Air” was not all that appealing? Obviously I needed to smell it, and since it didn't seem to be available locally (and it's too cold to go outside anyway), I ordered some right away. I'd like to point out that I made it a full 13 days into 2009 before breaking rule no. 1 (or no. 2? I can't remember) and buying something unsniffed, but this was cheap enough that it wouldn't have killed me if I'd hated it. And lo and behold, everyone who commented was right: it's wonderful.

Kenzo launched Air in 2003; it was intended as…

… a breath of fresh air… it lets a man discover his inner child. The fragrance denotes an elegant, masculine presence, awakening childhood sensations and familiar impressions, shaking things up and reinventing them…

By Mark Buxton Wood & Absinth ~ fragrance review

By Mark Buxton Wood & Absinth fragrance

The new By Marc Buxton line from perfumer Mark Buxton debuted last year with seven fragrances. Seven strikes me as excessive given the glut of product on the market at the moment — why not two or three really wonderful scents, with more to follow later? Everyone in the industry seems to agree there are too many fragrances; nobody seems willing to release fewer fragrances. Ah well, at least it isn’t twelve or fifteen, right?

The fragrances are meant to disclose “the personality through color code”, and on the Mark Buxton website* you can find the fragrance that suits you best by looking at a series of color blocks…

Six Scents: Series One, No. 3 The Spirit of Wood for Cosmic Wonder Light Source ~ fragrance review

Posted by Robin on 7 January 2009 38 Comments

The Spirit of Wood fragrance by Cosmic Wonder Light Source

The Six Scents Fragrance Initiative debuted last year. The project is a collaboration between Symrise, Metaproject and Seven New York: each year, they’ll release six new fragrances, each one pairing a Symrise perfumer with a designer, and donate a portion of the proceeds to charity. The beneficiary of the 2008 collection will be Designers Against AIDS.

Several of the fragrances in the 2008 collection were interesting (I’m still mulling over No. 2, Wicken 3000 oops, make that No. 4, Diagonal) but No. 3, The Spirit of Wood was the only one that inspired love at first sniff. No. 3 was developed by perfumer Philippe Paparella-Paris for Cosmic Wonder Light Source, the fashion line of Japanese designer Yukinori Maeda, and it’s worth repeating the perfumer’s statement from the ad copy…

And all this science I don't understand, part two

Posted by Robin on 3 November 2008 Leave a Comment

Scientists in Italy have found bacteria in the root of a tropical grass whose oils have been used in the cosmetic and perfumery industries. These bacteria seem to promote the production of essential oils, but also they change the molecular structure of the oil, giving it different flavours and properties: termicidal, insecticidal, antimicrobial and antioxidant.

— From Bacteria Manage Perfume Oil Production From Grass, an article in Science Daily about how bacteria aid in the production of vetiver oil.
