Guerlain Vetiver Extreme ~ fragrance review

Posted by Kevin on 22 January 2008 28 Comments

Guerlain Vetiver Extreme cologne

I’ve been a fan of Guerlain Vetiver for years; recently, I came across (and bought) a stash of unopened Vetiver from the 1980s and I was surprised at the difference between the current Vetiver fragrance and the cologne as it smelled 20 years ago. The earlier version of Vetiver, which I do remember wearing, is darker, plusher, a tad smoky and it’s more interesting (to my nose) than today’s version. However, the older Vetiver in Eau de Toilette strength disappears within an hour on my skin (just as it did “back when”) while today’s lighter-smelling Vetiver lasts all day. When I heard Guerlain was making an “extreme” version of classic Vetiver, I was hoping it would be reminiscent of the 1980s version, but with better lasting power…

Lalique Encre Noire ~ fragrance review, and a “buying unsniffed” poll

Posted by Robin on 5 October 2007 73 Comments

Lalique Encre Noire fragrance

Early on in my career as a perfume addict, I made any number of buying-unsniffed blunders (my record was considerably worse than Kevin’s 2 out of 3), and eventually swore off the practice entirely. Well, almost entirely. I try. But at least once a year, I fall prey to uncontrollable, spur-of-the-moment yearnings. In 2006, I actually did a little worse than I’d remembered: I bought Hermès Elixir des Merveilles (didn’t like it, so swapped for a bottle of Eau des Merveilles) and a half-bottle of Sel de Vetiver by The Different Company (like it well enough, but not sure I would have purchased if I’d smelled it first). I might have even bought L’Artisan Dzongkha unsniffed, but I honestly can’t remember. Ah well, that one I love.

I thought I might make it through all of 2007 unscathed, but a few weeks ago I caved on a bottle of Encre Noire by Lalique…

Maitre Parfumeur et Gantier Route du Vetiver ~ fragrance review

Posted by Robin on 17 July 2007 17 Comments

Route du Vetiver by Maitre Parfumeur et Gantier

The vetiver root, a plant originating from the Bourbon Islands, surprises with its raw strength and its warm, wooded scent.

Maître Parfumeur et Gantier unveils it in its most authentic state.

Hyperbole is generally a given in fragrance ad copy — no matter how dull the juice, we’ll be told a perfume sparkles with dazzling radiance, that it is exquisite, daring, sensual, luxurious, sublime and intoxicating. Maître Parfumeur et Gantier’s description of Route du Vetiver, quoted above, is that rare example of the opposite approach, “raw strength” being in this case something of an understatement…

Paul Smith Story for men ~ fragrance review

Posted by Robin on 5 January 2007 25 Comments

Paul Smith Story, fragrance packaging

British designer Paul Smith launched Story last year. The fragrance was created by perfumer Nathalie Gracia Cetto, and features Haitian vetiver along with grapefruit, bergamot, green ivy, jasmine, green rose, musks, mineral amber and cedarwood. Story was said to be inspired by Smith’s passion for books:

“I love the distinctive smell of antique books–of ageing paper and leather, the essence of time gone by, the imprint of wisdom and experience,” he commented. “The pristine scent of fresh print, so cleanly intoxicating when you know you’re the first person ever to open that book.” (via cosmeticsint, 9/8/2006)

When I first smelled Story on a test card, I was less than impressed…

Two vetivers: Wickle Chestnut & Vetiver and Anthousa Fig & Vetiver

Posted by Robin on 31 May 2006 17 Comments

Wickle Chestnut & Vetiver fragranceWickle is a gift & toiletries company founded in the UK in 2004 by illustrator Scott Wotherspoon and cosmetics expert Elisabeth Henrikse. Chestnut & Vetiver is one of the line's four fragrances (the others are Muskmallow, Periwinkle and Scented Tea Leaf) and features notes of toasted chestnut, woods, warm amber, musk and vetiver.

The idea of toasted nuts over earthy vetiver immediately called to mind Hermès Vetiver Tonka, but they are nothing alike. Chestnut & Vetiver is a simpler and fresher fragrance, without the deep rich notes of the Hermès…
