Ambra del Nepal by i Profumi di Firenze ~ fragrance review

Posted by Robin on 17 November 2005 24 Comments

i Profumi di Firenze Ambra del Nepal perfume

We have been extraordinarily lucky with the weather this month: it has been unseasonably warm up until today. Today, it is cold. I am not ready for cold, but it does give me an excuse to reach for one of my favorite winter fragrances: Ambra del Nepal by the Italian apothecary line i Profumi di Firenze. The notes are amber, cardamom and vanilla.

Ambra del Nepal is probably the only amber fragrance I really adore. The amber smells pale rather than dark, but at the same time, it is deep, rich and resinous, with a whisper of dry incense smoke. It is sweet, but the smoke and a generous dash of cardamom temper the sweetness so that it never feels heavy or cloying, even as the vanilla intensifies on the dry down. Laura Tonatto PlaisirLaura Tonatto PlaisirLaura Tonatto Plaisir

Italian perfumer Laura Tonatto has been creating fragrances since the early 1980s. In addition to the scents marketed under her own name, she has developed fragrances for Carthusia and Kerastase, among others. The first few minutes of Plaisir are dominated by sharp citrus notes…

Perfume of the day: L’Artisan Vanilia

Posted by Robin on 14 October 2005 41 Comments

L'Artisan Parfumeur Vanilia perfume

September was just beautiful in my neck of the woods, with one crisp, cool, sunny day after another. October has been, frankly, miserable. It has been grey, rainy and cold for the last week: just cold enough to require long sleeves and flannel sheets, but not quite cold enough to actually turn on the heat. I am not normally a huge fan of vanilla fragrances, but it is the sort of weather that calls for a cozy-comfort sort of scent, and vanilla fits the bill as well as anything.

L’Artisan Vanilia was released in 1978, and the notes are ylang ylang, vanilla bean, amber and sandalwood. It starts off smoky, and the smokiness intensifies over the next 20 minutes before fading into a lightly resinous floral-vanilla blend…

La Maison de la Vanille Eau Noire du Mexique

Vanilles du Monde is a set of five vanilla-based Eaux de Toilette from La Maison de la Vanille. Each of the fragrances focuses on vanilla from a specific country, and each is given a theme; Eau Noire du Mexique is called “the powdery accent” and has notes of bergamot, rose, jasmine, vanilla, iris, opoponax, tonka bean, and patchouli.

Eau Noire du Mexique starts with subtle spice notes and lots of bergamot…
